My husband and I are planning a spring break trip for us, our 2 adult sons, and a friend for each. Our kids are mid-20s. We will make the arrangements and pay for everyone – this is a big splurge for us. The budget is relatively open ended – we will go Wednesday-Sunday with maybe one more day on one end, depending on dates.
I’m looking for ideas on resorts and locations. We are pretty much stuck on Florida. We need a three-bedroom accommodation – we want to have a common living room where we can hang out together and some form of a kitchen. We need activities on site, preferably some golf, and we’d love a beach, which can be Atlantic or Gulf. We need to be within an hour of a airport with direct flights from LAX. I figure the east coasties have a lot more flexibility, but we want to make it easy for the west coast contingent.
We’ve previously gone to South Seas in Captiva which we loved – but it doesn’t meet the transportation location spec.
Check out Airbnb. Go to South Beach, get close to Lincoln Ave where Delano is. There are many great apartments and houses on the beach for rent. Kids could go out clubbing at night and sit by the pool in the afternoon.
I just don’t know of anyplace in Florida that has activities on site. Aren’t those mostly all inclusives? There’s many places in Florida…the further south the better for chances of warm weather during springbreak. thd gulf side is prettier. I’m partial to siesta Key beach. Beautiful and lots of things to do in Sarasota. One hour from the Tampa airport.
Longboat Key just outside of Sarasota and 1 hour south of Tampa fits your requirements. Make sure to take a day trip to the fabulous Ringling Art Museum and Ca’ D’zan
Longboat Key Club looks awesome – but no 3BR units tho. The 3BR thing makes it comfortable for all of us – cannot put one pair on a pullout couch. Perhaps my kids are too spoiled. I did find a great rental home on Siesta Key and I might be able to make that work.
@bjkmom Orlando is on the table. We have been to Disney a lot as a family (and I have been there a lot on my own for business and going later in March to work a trade show as well), so it’s not new and exciting to us. But – I found a great place with great 3BR units and stuff to do besides the parks. The golf is a big plus. So it’s absolutely under consideration – and certainly meets the needs of direct flights and close to the airport. It’s just missing the beach … and maybe we can do without it. (California kid lives in South Bay; we have a beach house in shoreline Connecticut)
What time of year are you talking about? The Panhandle of Florida isn’t terribly warm in March and is warmer in April, but there is no guarantee of beach weather in terms of temperature. Golf, walking on the beach, etc are all still good to go though.
The Breakers in Palm Beach or the Cloisters at Sea Island Georgia. Breakers might be problematic in that you would most likely need to book 2 or 3 rooms rather than a condo but you can rent a house/cottage at the Cloisters.
Also take a look at Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina. You can rent a cottage as well as staying at the Inn. Very nice with plenty to do.
Here’s an out-of-the-box idea: Palm Springs. No beach, but plenty of pools and golf. Plus there is hiking in the desert/foothills, Mt. San Jacinto, great mid-century architecture and date shakes
