Spring registration

My daughter is a freshman in the College of Computer, Math and Natural Sciences.

She heard that Spring 2012 registration begins Oct 27-Dec 8. Her My UMD account says that her registration date is Nov 30 at 2:45. She is worried that she has a really late date and will not be able to get the classes and professors that she wants.

Is this a typical date for freshman? How do they determine when you can register for classes.

In most cases (Engineering may be a difference), your registration date is based on how many credit hours you have (both UMD hours + any AP credit hours you have)…) She’d be best served to look across all the CORE requirements she needs and have a long list of potential classes in case she faces some classes that close before she gets to register. It is a frustrating feeling to watch every day after registration starts and see classes fill up. There are always waitlists, too…

astrophysics mom hit it right on the dot. Make sure you have back up schedules ready.

I’m in CMNS as well and I think she really didn’t get it that bad. The first 2 weeks are for students going into 400 level courses. Also, Nov 30 isn’t that bad compared to some other majors (engineers get really late registrations), so you should be able to get at least some of the CORE courses you want to take.

Lastly, some professors will easily let students into their class if the students just ask them when spring comes around. Basically, don’t lose hope!

Why is it that Engineering works differently? What are their registration dates based on? I know from a friend of ours that her son always seems to register really late.

I had it on the second-to-last day last year, for both the registration for Spring 2011 and the current semester. I didn’t get some of the sections or classes I wanted, but I just had to find other alternatives. She’s a little over a week before the last day, so she should be ahead of a lot of freshman. I’m a sophomore and I don’t register until Nov. 21, and that’s closer to the 30th in terms of registering than appears because of Thanksgiving break.

^^ I register on 11/3. I’ll be registering as a senior for the next 5 semesters! I love the system :)

^^yes, both of my Ds have said a thousand thank-yous for all those AP classes in high school…it has made such a difference in terms of registration dates, housing – both lived/will prob live on campus in the Language House all 4 years (as well as parking spot assignment!).

One of D2’s majors is Spanish literature, and she was trying to get into courses as a freshman that were mostly jrs and seniors…not good for registering. She did have several good experiences with waitlists, talking to professors to get into their classes, etc. It was a little unnerving for her to not have her schedule finalized until a couple of weeks into the semester, but it always worked out fine.

Housing? Your number of credits doesn’t affect housing priority though, only the number of consecutive semesters you’ve spent on campus/enrolled at UMD. And basically everyone within each class has the same, so it’s pure lottery.

@Bornin, isn’t Language House a very special case?

Oh I don’t know. But I believe everyone can keep the dorm they’re in each year right? I know I had that option last year, to not even enter the housing lottery and just keep my room (not that I wanted to). But yeah, Language House might be different but I figured I’d clear it up in case someone thinks all housing goes by credits.

Maybe I misspoke? (gasp!) It helped for parking, but I’m probably confused about LH/housing… Sorry!

The time for registration really depends on your credits. So it won’t be late for your daughter since she is the first year students. Most freshmen will be registered in early December, so she got luck!
