Sprint-Nextel Hybrid Cellular Service

We just replaced our “fleet” of Nextel cell phones with the Sprint-Nextel hybrid units…the ones that use the 1.9 GHz CDMA Sprint network for cellular/data and the 800 MHz iDEN Nextel infrastructure for direct-connect service. (We like the Nextel direct-connect feature so much we found it worth the few extra bucks a month)

I was a little concerned about the Sprint 1.9 GHz CDMA network in rural areas of Florida. FSU, as you know, is in Tallahassee and it’s quite rural in areas surrounding Tallahassee. I was afraid our daughters would not have sufficient cellular coverage for emergencies.

I am here to say that when our older daughter drove back today she found ZERO dead spots even going up the more rural route we enjoy. I am very impressed…and we even had a long conversation through the supposed worst coverage areas as a test. The phone only roamed once, and that was only for about 5 minutes…completely acceptable.

Sprint rocks…it beats Nextel cellular hands down, and we’ve had Nextel service for years. Their plans even are better than Verizon’s, especially in areas like start-time for free nights/weekends calling.
