SRAR vs Official Transcript

Please settle a debate - if a college doesn’t specifically state that they need an “official transcript” for your application (i.e. Michigan, CU Boulder), then is the SRAR sufficient? My S25 is adamant that his college counselor said he needs to send an official transcript to all 16 schools he applied to. There is a fee for each one. I’m telling him there are only a handful where its required. As proof, his Pitt application just moved to under review and they did get an official transcript.

Michigan requirements include a high school transcript: Requirements & Deadlines | University of Michigan Office of Undergraduate Admissions . (EDIT: did not notice the high school transcript the first time)

CU Boulder requires transcripts (official or unofficial) on application: https://www.colorado.edu/admissions/process/first-year/apply

Neither Michigan nor Boulder are SRAR schools.

Regardless, I would go by the school’s website and portal (as appropriate) to know whether they need an official transcriot from the counselor. Michigan requires an official transcript, boulder will take official or unofficial as noted above

You mean Pitt did NOT get an official transcript, correct?

Maybe to help his counselor your S could show them a few schools’ websites? Here’s Pitt’s (a SRAR school):

If I completed the SRAR, when do I submit an official high school transcript?

If you are admitted and enroll at the University of Pittsburgh, you will be required to submit your official high school transcript following high school graduation.

For some reason his college counselor (private) insisted we send one to all schools. I gave up arguing and had him do it.

Sorry to hear that, and understandable to just give them what they want. I definitely dislike when schools charge to send transcripts, especially when it sounds like the counselor doesn’t really understand how things work. (And I do know many counselors are predominately social-emotional counselors who have little to no training in college counseling :slightly_frowning_face:)

at this point I’m like What’s another $50?
