I had gone to the SRSC for my first time ever last night with 2 friends, and it was so busy. We tried to run the track but there were too many old people walking on it and then all the courts were full and and equipment in the weight toom was all limited and there were again old people every where.

When is a better time to go here, when it is not busy? Is the HPER better than the SRSC?

I work at the HPER, and can assure you that while it may be more dated than the SRSC, it’s just as good if not better.

SRSC/HPER membership is granted to all IU students for free (or a minimal part of tuition, way lower than a health club would charge) and they receive the bulk of their funding by allowing a charged membership to people not affiliated to the university. It’s also part of the reason that they provide so many yoga/pilates/etc sessions. So as long as the SRSC is free, there’re gonna be old people working out there and it’s always gonna be busy.

Granted, the SRSC is newer and nicer and closer to the dorms. Yet HPER has more courtspace as well as martial arts and other ** free ** specialty classes that the SRSC doesn’t offer. Also, the HPER rarely if ever hits capacity, where as I’ve had to wait to get into the weight room at the SRSC several times because they hit capacity. The Royer pool is open right around the time peole get out of class, and still it’s virtually empty every day… where as at the SRSC you have to wait to get a lane even when they’re making people double up on lanes.

A lot of people also say that the SRSC is where you go to be “seen” and the HPER is where you go to legitimately work out. The HPER is less cut throat and you feel less obligated to look good.

I seldom use the SRSC, but the busiest time at HPER is 5PM-9PM and the slowest part of the day is around 11 AM. The SRSC should be the same, so if you can work that into your schedule, it’s way better than going later in the afternoon or evening.

I like the SRSC better personally. I went a decent amount the fall semester, and while it was generally pretty busy, I think it only hit capacity once or twice. I think a lot of the people who made new years resolutions to lose weight/get in better shape will stop going as frequently (as it generally works in gyms; membership is highest in January) and itll be less crowded. At least I hope.
