What are the average SSAT percentiles of applicants accepted into Loomis Chaffee and Hotchkiss?
I am not sure anyone knows this for a fact without insider information. From my experience, average scores give you a shot and above average scores make up the majority of the accepted group.
Hotchkiss’s median was 92nd percentile according to one resource (who knows if it’s super reliable, but seems credible)
Unless it’s crept up in the last few years – and it may have! – Hotchkiss’ average was in the 86th percentile.
thankyou! and do you think its higher/lower for LC?
I would be guessing if I answered (I was not guessing for Hotchkiss).
LC had been high 70s for quite a while, however it could easily (I don’t know) have crept up a few points to 80 or more over the last couple of years. Its applicant pool has become increasingly competitive.
Hotchkiss SSAT scores have gone up as well - however, that’s a byproduct of a more competitive applicant pool, not because the school is specifically looking for higher SSAT scores. As often noted, it’s not the most important consideration in an application.
All of these schools probably had averages go up over the last four years partly because they were test optional and like colleges people were only submitting if their scores were tippy top. It will be interesting to see how that changes this year at schools which are requiring tests again. As a parent of a kid whose scores were lower than we expected I hope they swing closer to what their pre-Covid numbers were like.
The average SSAT for successful applicants at these schools doesn’t matter much. What matters more is your SSAT as compared to others like you in the applicant pool. Even then, however, other factors are more important.
I have below average SSAT for Andover and Exeter buts its above that 85% percentile check box that ppl talk abt. So will I be fine?
You might be. The median SSAT score at Exeter last year was 93rd percentile. That said, SSATs are probably seen as more important on this site than they are in real admissions decisions. 85th percentile probably shows that you can do the work at Exeter, so they will then look at the rest of your application. I know there are many kids there with lower SSAT scores but I don’t know what else they brought to the table.
