SSAT percentiles

What are the scores that correspond with benchmark percentiles in for the SSAT? I tried to find out what scores were approximately what percentiles on the internet, but I couldn’t find anything.

if it’s not on the website, it would be in the practice book.

I couldn’t find it in my prep book. Does anyone know off the top of their head?

SSAT percentiles are somewhat tricky to calculate as they are reported by grade and gender. Anyway if you are a grade 9 female the 50th percentile in 2002 was 306 verbal, 308 math 298 verbal. Since the top score is 350 in any area we can eyeball the standard deviations as approximately10-14. For practical purposes the benchmark 99th percentile would then be about 340 and the benchmark 90th percentile around 325. For a grade eight student the benchmark scores would probably be about 2-3 points lower.

It’s on a scale to 800, isn’t it? Approximate numbers are in the Princeton Review book.

according to the website, for the older grades it is the same way as the sat, 2400 would be the top score.

Maybe they have changed the format this year but as far as I’m aware the ssat raw score is computed on a 350 scale
with the 50th percentiles given below. 1050 would be the maximum score.

Grade Level Reading Verbal Quantitative
5 273 278 271
6 281 288 281
7 287 296 288
8 293 304 299
9 298 311 306
10 302 315 312

Yes, it’s out of 2400–800 in math, verbal, and reading, and an essay that’s not scored.

If you want precise numbers, contact the SSAT people. These numbers can change yearly because they are based on data from the last 3 years of test takers. They also divide the group by sex.
It seems to me that SSAT scores are not very important if your score falls within the range of accepted students for the schools to which you apply. I think they become important when they are significantly above or below the accepted student range. At the most competitive schools, a 99% score may not get you special attention unless the rest of your application is stellar. At a school with an average SSAT score of 70%, it might get you attention providing that the rest of your application is great.

What exactly happens with the essay? If it’s not scored, what is it for?

It gives the Admissions Committee the opportunity to see a writing sample that is unquestionably from the applicant. Some applicants get too much essay help from eager parents or professional coaches. The resulting product may not really be the applicant’s work. The SSAT writing sample also shows whether or not the applicant can structure an effective essay in a timed situation.

In my opinion they don’t give you enough time or space to write in. They gave me 25 minutes to write an essay in a page.

DO you think this essay, really matters to admissions people? I mean, will it be a big deal if it’s just average?

The essays that you submit are important to the admissions process. They allow the admissions officers to see how you think and write.
