SSAT Scores.

Hi all,

Are these scores good or should I take the SSAT again.
9th Grade, repeat year.
Schools applying to: The Storm King School, The Stony Brook School, The Hotchkiss School.

Scores:
Verbal: 647
Math : 605
Reading: 614
Total: 1866

Thanks

What are the percentiles?

Verbal: 647, 40
Math : 605, 9
Reading: 614, 24
Total: 1866, 18

Based on Boarding School Review, Storm King does not require the SSAT. The other 2 schools do - I don’t know how competitive Stony Brook is, but Hotchkiss is very competitive and those percentiles would be a huge red flag to them.

I would recommend doing more prep work and taking the test again in January. SSAT does get the scores to schools in time for the January 15th deadline.

Okay thanks, do you know the average SSAT score a Hotchkiss applicant should have? What else than SSAT scores does Hotchkiss want?

85% average. That score would not be competitive for Hotchkiss. Consider the SSAT like a placement test and it’s easier to see that a relatively rigorous and competitive place like Hotchkiss (or similar schools) would not be a good fit. BTW, was the score calculated against current 8th graders or 9th graders? The former would be the testing peer group if applying to repeat 9th grade.

Hotchkiss is an elite school, they expect high grades, high scores and impressive ECs. And even with great stats, there will be hundreds of kids who will be turned away this year.

@Altras is correct that if you are repeating 9th you should have your scores calculated as if you are currently in 8th grade. You can request to have your scores reassesed based on 8th grade class level, if you did not already. But even then, it would not boost your score enough to be in the ballpark for Hotchkiss. You’d be better off taking it again in January.

I also recommend looking at more schools on BoardingSchoolReview.com and finding other schools that may be a good fit for you.
