St Andrews Application Process/Chances

I am an American student with a father from Scotland that is heavily pressuring me to apply and enroll at St Andrews. I am very interested in going there because of the prestegious reputation of the school. I want to get a head start on the process because I will be very busy in the fall. How can I start my application/essay for St Andrews. I want to apply through direct application. Can I get links if there are any?

I had 2100 SATs and around a 3.6 GPA with a lot of honors courses and AP classes throughout high school. I have a ton of extra curriculars as well. Does the school care solely on my GPA or do they look at the grades more heavily. My grades dropped Junior year tremendously from my 4.0 Sophomore year and 3.8 Freshman year. I will probably have a 4.0 for senior year though. Do you guys think I will have a chance at getting admitted?

I can see some encouragement on his part but this really isn’t fair to you. He has lived his life; you should have some say in how you live yours. Will he also pick your wife and job? You need a heart-to-heart talk with him.

This alone is a terrible reason to pick a school. Do you want to live abroad for 4 years? Do you know what student life, classroom experience will be like?

Here is some app info in any case:

[Direct applications | University of St Andrews](http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/admissions/ug/int/northamericanapplicants/Directapplications/)

Generally, to get into St. Andrews it is very difficult. But the entrance requirements are very different dependent on where you are from (though this might change with Student fees adjustments).

St Andrews is a very popular school with American applicants (they comprise a significant part of the student body). And because, you will be paying higher fees (I assume, unless your Scottish father pays UK tax etc) - your chances of admission are a lot higher (Students with IB points of 43 routinely get rejected with home status).

I think with your SAT scores it seems manageable and you stand a good chance. They will more likely look at your AP scores because in the UK they prefer public examinations, ones that are not prone to grade inflation or subject to “class attendance” or “effort” considerations.

Perhaps look at applying to the University of Edinburgh too; similar system though not quite as international, more vibey and cultural. It’s less competitive but quite prestigious (For medicine, it is extremely renown; after all it is where Dr. Jekyll went!).

Though they are both very good schools and very pretty. I’m not sure if you can find something quite as stunning as these “ancient” universities - very different, but very pretty and traditional.

A vital difference between UK and US schools; in Britain they choose you based upon your passion for the subject specifically - and not because of your personality. So it would be very foolish to integrate things from any college essays into your application. It is more about your love for the subject, your ability to study it and perhaps a bit about yourself (limited to why you chose to study the subject, perhaps a little bit on what you want to do with your degree).

Your extracurriculars are taken into far less consideration than they are in the States. Only include them if they can say something about why you want to study the subject etc. Your passion etc.

But again, St. Andrews takes special consideration to American applicants (because they are familiar with them). So you won’t have to anglicize your application too much.

All the best luck with your application.

Based on my meeting with the US Admissions counsellor an SAT score over 1950, GPA of 3.6 and a good essay gives you a very good chance. Hope you figured out the system by now. If you really want St. Andrews apply direct ASAP. If you are applying to other UK schools you MUST apply through UCAS.

I am a senior and I have a large amount of extracurriculars. My GPA is above the minimum entrance GPA. Mine is 3.65. The only thing is, my ACT is a 26 and that is pretty low (I test badly). I wanna know if i still have a chance of getting into University of St. Andrews???

HELP!

questions:

My son was recently admitted. Your scores appear to be right in line with what is required of American applicants. And, as someone previously mentioned, your grades on your AP exams are important. So hopefully, you got some 4’s and 5’s. And your ECs, far less so. Now, if you count as a Scottish applicant, the good news is that your tuition I believe would be zero, but your chances of getting in would be reduced, because they only accept about 10% of the “natives”. If you go, you better to be ready to live in a quaint, but small, town, without the usual shops you find in shopping malls, and without a lot of hot night life. It would be more like going to the local pub with a few friends.

I have researched this matter intensively, and it appears that St Andrews, if it were an American school, would be something akin to a Boston College or a Georgetown in terms of academic standing.

It is about 1/3 American, 1/3 Scot, and 1/3 regular UK.

I would suggest that you apple to William and Mary next year and do the St. Andrews joint degree program. You start off two years at WM and then you go two years at st. andrews and you recieve a bachelors in arts and international honors I think. However, major are limited to about four. Admission is also highly selective in this program, they accept 20 people for this I think each year. five in each major.

my friend got in with similar stats. ur probably good.

I am mainly worried because my Test scores are below average. has anyone been accepted with lower test scores then average?
