But I wouldn’t be put off by the request for formal dresses. In my experience, formal partying in all UK universities is less of a big thing than in the US. Yes, some do have occasional balls and formal dinners, but, apart from the occasional dinner you might want to go to, it’s entirely up to you whether or not you’re interested, and many people are not. But people sometimes get odd ideas from TV programs etc.
