Visited the school, the campus overlooking the ocean is stunning, like a countryclub. Found this from Wiki about the school: “Considered to be of the most socially exclusive ilk among WASP circles[1], St. George’s is mentioned in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic first novel, This Side of Paradise.” ref [1] leads to David Brooks article in NYT (2003) “Bred of Power”, which said following: “Dean even went to a slightly more socially exclusive prep school, St. George’s, while Bush made do with Andover before they both headed off to Yale.” Socially exclusive seems to be the label here.

Then I looked up St George’s student list, and found among over 350 students, only 3-4 with Asian last names are from US (many from Asia though), as to 13-14 out of ~350 at Groton.

Unsure of what exactly your looking for. With all due respect, if you want to find an article that improperly portrays almost any private school then NYT would be the paper of choice. I know one can find disparaging articles on many Boarding Schools. SG prides itself on it’s diversity and social acceptance to all people. They just completed a GLBT conference last month at the school. The new students arrive at St. George’s excited with a positive sense of self determination to succeed that does not diminish in their Jr/Sr. years but is enhanced by the Headmaster, Faculty and fellow classmates. Yes, it’s social alright but socially exclusive, ridiculous.

I have a friend with a brother at St. George’s, and she says that right now they’re having a big drug and alcohol problem and are expelling people left and right.

That is simply not true. My son attends…if anything, SG has a “one strike policy” – if kids are found with drugs or alcohol, they are out…period. To my knowledge, there has been 2 -4 kids dismissed for those reasons. Additionally, SG is no more “exclusive” than any other boarding school.

There were 2 separate events right before Christmas break. Total 4 expelled, that has been it for the year. Kids make stupid mistakes. Unfortunate that a few can tarnish any school’s image. There are plenty of kids trying to get into not just SG but any one of these schools and the administrations do not have to tolerate any crap. Having said that, I can also verify that the whole school was deeply affected and hurt by those expulsions. As we all know those issues exist at all schools but I can say for SG the experience of last Christmas has not been lost and the so called party scene has diminished considerably.
