Is St. John Fisher College a good school? I have heard wonderful things about the campus life there, and the community feeling, but how are the academics? I visited there and I loved it. It has everything that I want. I have heard great things about the academics there myself. However, my parents talked to one of their friends who said that it wasn’t prestigious enough for me. (32 ACT; SAT I Reading 640, Math 640, Writing 680; SAT II Reading 580, Math 680, Writing 680)

I’m not trying to brag, I am definitely not the brightest student out there, but I would say I’m pretty decent. Although it is not a huge concern of mine if the college I go to is prestigious or not, I would like to know how Fisher’s academics stand, since my family has heard both.

I would most likely be on the Pre-Engineering track, physics major, or mathematics major. I am not quite sure what I want to do yet.

Advice, personal experience, anything is greatly appreciated!

My daughter is a rising senior at Saint John Fisher and has been quite happy with her academic experience. Her ACT/SAT test scores were not as high as yours but she is a serious student, has worked very hard and done well. I believe she has found the level of challenge to be appropriate and the professors to be supportive. Overall I think she would give the academics at Fisher an A.

You are wise to not be too concerned with a college’s perceived prestige. At the undergrad level, you should look closely at a few important statistics such as four and six year graduation rates and the freshman retention rate. These are the best objective indicators of quality academics and Fisher performs well when measured against them. Fisher is also quite generous with merit aid and with your scores, assuming your GPA is similarly impressive, you would most certainly be awarded Fisher’s top merit scholarship. That said, Fisher does not offer any full tuition scholarships and with your scores (and hopefully very good GPA) there are other good schools at which you could be in the running for a scholarships more generous that those offered at Fisher. For this reason I would encourage you to seek schools which offer quality academics, like Fisher, as well as lots of merit $$.
