St. Louis safety, weather etc....also WashU vs. Emory

I would like to get feedback on the safety of the surroundings of St. Louis. Does one feel safe to explore in the vicinity of the campus?

What about the rest of St. Louis, is it fairly safe?

Does it really get up to 100 in summer?
I don’t want to rule out the option of staying summer for research or something.

How does WUSTL compare with Emory? I am going to be a biology major (not pre-med), but in ecology.

Any comments on where it is easier to get a merit scholarship: WUSTL or Emory?

Please share.

Many Thanks in advance.

Great questions! I’d like to know, too.

Yes, the area surrounding the campus is very safe.

No. There are parts of the city that you should never be in.

Yes.

I don’t know about Emory, but the biology/chemistry departments here are great. Keep in mind that the majors in those two areas are some of the hardest in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Once again, don’t know about Emory, but the full scholarships are pretty difficult to get here. But you should keep in mind that WashU’s need based aid is very good. Even if your family is upper middle class, you have a very good chance of getting a nice financial aid package.

News form this week

http://www.studlife.com/news/student_mugged_at_gunpoint_near_greenway_apts.

The Greenway Apartment incident was a rare, isolated crime instance, but they seem to be getting more common as criminals these days seem to be getting extremely bold. Students just need to be even more careful than ever, especially alone or in small groups.

I do still consider the Danforth campus safe, as well as the surrounding neighborhoods around campus in U. City and Clayton. Walking by yourself at night where there are not many other people around is never a good idea, no matter where you are.

St Louis will get up to 100 in the summer time, but Atlanta, where Emory is, will surely be as bad (if not worse).

Campus safety is fine 99% of the time, and you’ll most likely be here for 4 years and not have an unsafe encounter once. The unsafest part of the St Louis area isn’t even in Missouri. It’s 30 minutes away in East St Louis, Illinois, across the mississippi river. With any big city, there are areas you shouldn’t go to at 3am alone. With any college in a big city, there will be an occasional crime that is an outlier. The neighborhoods immediately surround WUSTL - like Frontenac, Ladue, and Clayton - are insanely wealthy and protected. I heard that excluding the North Shore of Chicago, those towns and neighborhoods around WUSTL are the most expensive in the entire midwest. Crime tends to stay in the shady parts and not overflow into the areas around WUSTL. Except for those extreme once-per-year cases, you really shouldn’t have any problem walking to Clayton, the CWE, or the Loop alone. And the majority of the time anyway you’ll be walking with other people and friends.

In the Biology major, you can choose one of half-a-dozen tracks to specialize in a certain field. Ecology is one of them. Here is information on that: Tracks
If you have an interest in ecology, you might want to double major in Anthropology as well. They have a concentration in Physical Antrhropolgy which might be up your alley. The Medicine and Society freshman seminar program would be a good fit for a freshman year experience, too.

I would like to get feedback on the safety of the surroundings of St. Louis. Does one feel safe to explore in the vicinity of the campus?

Yeah, the police are everywhere.

What about the rest of St. Louis, is it fairly safe?

Some parts, but not at night. I haven’t had any problems, so if you’re just smart (don’t walk around alone at night), you would be fine.

Does it really get up to 100 in summer?
I don’t want to rule out the option of staying summer for research or something.

Haha, I’m from Atlanta, and I promise you, there is no way St. Louis is hotter.

How does WUSTL compare with Emory? I am going to be a biology major (not pre-med), but in ecology.

I think Wash U has better academics, but Emory is good, too.

Any comments on where it is easier to get a merit scholarship: WUSTL or Emory?

Probably Emory, because it is less competitive.

Good luck!
