As the title says, I was going through St. Paul’s candidate statement when I realized that it asks for a photo on one part of the application. It’s not required, but still, isn’t that kind of weird? What’s the point of asking for every applicant’s photo? Is this included in the admissions in any way? Will I be hurt if I don’t include my photo?
I suspect some schools ask for a picture just so they can “put a face to the name” and help recall when going over the application long after an interview. Only one of the schools my DD applied to asked for a picture.
If you have concerns about its use, I would email the admissions office to clarify why they are asking for it and what safeguards they have to make sure it doesn’t “go public”
I didn’t love when my son’s school did that, but I will say the HOS knew each child by name as they pulled up, so perhaps putting a name to a face is very important to the school. I also think they used the pictures when they were working on a big board of roommate assignments and moving kids around in different combinations. Easier to look at a kid and know who they are quickly than try to remember the name that went with each kid.
Also a great way to figure out race/ethnicity. Maybe not something you do pre-decision.
