st petersburg florida lodging

My D and a friend are planning on going to a concert in St Petersburg. They plan on spending one night in a motel. They don’t want to spend much but want it to be safe and clean. I have never used Hotwire but it looks like you can get some 3 to 3.5 star places for under 75 dollars. Of course you don’t exactly know the area. Is most of St Petersburg safe? Her friend is male.
My D has worked in hotels and she feels they should skip having a reservation and walk in to get the best rate. Her feeling is that after 9 pm most places want to just sell any remaining rooms. Especially if the front desk clerk gets commission on any sold rooms. I doubt with this approach they will save off the hotwire prices but they would be able to chose the place.
Both are not from the St Petersberg area.

We live in the area, and I would highly recommend reservations. With hotels.com or hotwire, you can get good rates. There are LOTS of hotels along the beaches. From mom&pop to the Hilton. In downtown St. Pete itself, there are some B&B type hotels along with the big name, BIG dollar Vinoy resort. IMO, The downtown area is safe, the beaches are safe. There are some parts of St. Pete that are less safe, but I don’t think there are any hotels in those areas. If your D finds a hotel that she is seriously thinking about, feel free to PM me and I’ll let you know what I think about the area.
