I’m okay with people being clear about who they are. In fact, I prefer it. Gotta wonder though, how one school could have so many employees lacking critical thinking skills. Sad.
Agreed - you’d think one person might have said " is this really a good idea? "
Halloween costumes worn by teachers on the job is just unprofessional. And political costumes, costumes portraying any ethnic group are a bad idea.

If what swimcatsmom says is true then they won the contest to portray stereotypes. They did the exercise. And very well. Jumping to conclusions from Facebook photos Should be an Olympic sport.
I don’t know if it’s true - the quotation says It is “claimed”. My pointwas, if it’s true, it seems like an incredibly stupid idea to do a competition portraying countries by stereotypes. Almost impossible to avoid being offensive. I can think of a few pretty offensive ones off the top of my head.

My kids teachers did. Indeed they had a theme. One year the Principal was the pied piper and the teachers were rats. One year the principal was a tree and the teachers were all woodland and forest creatures. Nothing offensive luckily.
Looks to me like the teachers had prepared the costumes as part of an assignment to demonstrate racist stereotypes (dumb idea but appears to have come from administration ) and then because they won the excercise decided to use the costume at Halloween (dumber idea…all theirs). But this is a guess
The teachers at our elementary school wear costumes on Halloween. The kids love it. Of course, they dress as princesses and super heroes and pirates — NOT as racial stereotypes.
To those on the front page asking why this is relevant - these are TEACHERS. These are the people intimately involved in children’s education from the earliest year. How on earth is this NOT relevant to a college site?
I hope the principal is held accountable as well. I expect someone in administration knew about this before the Facebook post.
I don’t really understand why kids 5-10 years old would be entertained by the Wall and gang. It’s not funny to children like seeing their teachers dressed like pirates or ducks or ballerinas would be.
My relative had all the teachers hanging streamers trailing from their umbrellas a la sea anemones. That was cute and as far as I know no marine creatures were offended. They use the umbrella for yard duty, supervising recess in the sun.
The teachers at the elementary school in Idaho used poor judgment, very poor judgment.
The K-2 teachers and students at the elementary school in our neighborhood all dress in costumes and have a Halloween Parade. The kids love it and parents, community members, and the 3-5 students line the hallways to see the cute kids in their costumes. The K teachers are always the most creative – last year they were characters from the Pete the Cat books. One of the 1st grade teachers was Mary Poppins and another was Clifford, the Big Red Dog. GS and I attended the parade last year and he was delighted.
When our kids were in preschool, there was such a wealth of creativity for costumes—kids and teachers. I can’t recall a single offensive one. When my kids were in grade thru HS, ditto.
I don’t see any reason to normalize or glamorize piracy by dressing as jovial homicidal pirates.
How can we justify a witch costume? It is glorifying a time in history during which large numbers of women were tortured and put to death because they were suspected witches. I think it would be rather triggering to any female to encounter a witch costume since it clearly glorifies the demonization of women.
Elementary schools in my area still dress up for Halloween, but the theme this year was career day. When D was still in elementary school, it was dress as your favorite book character.
