Standard Broadway Repertoire???

As we are working on song selection (my S is a current Junior) for next year’s auditions, we have had a couple of questions come up regarding “standard Broadway repertoire.” This term comes up a lot in conjunction with schools’ audition requirements. So, what exactly qualifies as “standard”… or more specifically, how far can we stretch?

1) What about songs written for a FILM musical, which was before the stage (Broadway) musical? For example, songs from ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ (film 1954/stage 1978), ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ (film 1952/stage 1983).

2) What about songs that existed before their Broadway musical? For example, songs from ‘Movin’ Out’, ‘Rock of Ages’, ‘Momma Mia’, ‘American Idiot’ etc.

Thank you!

Typically standard broadway musical rep is pre 1965. But that is not inclusive. Some view it as not popular music ie abba before mama Mia. If you are not sure call the school and ask. They don’t have to know which student you are asking for

When you’re trying to figure out the standard Broadway repertoire, look at the composers. There are songs that were written for movies that are still considered standard rep. Anything from Seven Brides and Singing is OK.
