standard MT repertoire

I’m looking for a song to sing for my audition. I am by no means a MT major, I’m an acting major. But the school I’m auditioning for requires acting majors to sing 16 bars of a standard musical theatre song. I was going to go with some Sondheim, or J.R.B but then i came across Scott Alan’s Kiss the Air. this song suits me very well and shows off my range, but i can’t seem to find out if it is standard musical theatre repertoire! What are your thoughts?

It’s wise to avoid either Sondheim or JRB, as their piano accompaniments are notoriously difficult to play. Scott Alan is an excellent contemporary composer, but his songs are not really considered standard musical theatre. Think along the lines of Rogers & Hammerstein, Jerry Herman, Lerner & Lowe, etc.

Will you be singing with piano accompaniment or a cappella?

If you need to bring sheet music, do you know how to set it up? Lots of posters here can explain what’s expected if you need that information.

If you’re singing without piano, I’d suggest something simple. How about the first two lines of “Edelweiss” or “My Favorite Things”? Singing something that shows your full range might be tricky without a piano to give you a starting note. You wouldn’t want to start too high. I think, in an acting audition, they’re just looking to see if you’re confident and can carry a tune. So pick a simple tune that you can sing with gusto!
