Standardized test that decides if you pass or not?

Okay so I live in Texas and we have bout 4 TAKS a year (depends what grade you’re in). If we don’t pass the reading and math we are held back. Today we got back our scores. I got commended on both of them  but I saw a lot of people crying cause they didn’t pass and when my choir teacher saw them he gave a big speech about how the TAKS is wrong and teachers should just teach and how we shouldn’t have the TAKS… I think if you failed you are too dumb to go to the next level and need another year of review since most American kids are really stupid by other countries standards (I’m Vietnamese)
Do you think it’s right that students need to pass a standardized test to move on to the next grade level?

No. get off your high horse. Maybe they don’t take tests well. A test doesn’t determine how smart you are.

^State tests for the most part are so easy and curved so much, you can fail the class and still do well on the state test. I think it should decide if you pass. Just my $.02

Yea it does… why do we take it if it wasn’t meant to determine how well we are in a subject?

^ you just say that b/c you scored high.

Yeah, I agree that it shouldn’t be required. I Pennsylvania we have the PSSA (in Math, Reading, Science, and Writing), and if you don’t get proficient or advanced you have to take them again in your senior year along with a bunch of remedial classes to help you pass. If you don’t get proficient the second time you keep taking it again until you do, because you have to pass to graduate. Pretty unfair to me.

It should be considered, but other factors should also play in the decision of whether you fail or not.

Not really cause I’m just frustrated how everybody at my school is saying they hate the test just because they failed it and how it’s stupid just cause they’re to lazy to do it.

I would copy and paste my post again, but I would have a feeling of deja vu.

TAKS is like that but you get to take it once and now that there are a lot of budget cuts you can’t take it again because the district can’t afford summer school…

CA HS Exit Exam (CAHSEE):
Sample English question:
What is the subject of this sentence:
The child ran along the fence.

Sample Math question:
Add:
-1+5

If you fail that thing, you should be BANNED from society. >.<

wow your tests are cakewalks. IL actually TESTS on on stuff in the Science sections.

K-12 is 13 years. Everyone gets the same, 13 years. Some people say it’s a disservice to the student to promote them ahead when they’re not ready. It’s a greater disservice to the tax paying public, everyone enrolled in a public school, and the idea of equal rights for all citizens to keep that kid back (not to mention, probably half the time still a disservice to the kid to NOT promote them).

For what it’s worth, the Michigan Merit Exam sounds like it was something along the lines of that CA HS Exit Exam.

Sometimes you can bamboozle them into giving you only 12 years ;)

Holy #&$^…I’ve spent more than 13/17 of my life in $%#@ school.

^ School isn’t THAT bad. I honestly don’t mind it, except when I have like 3+ borderline As. NOT FUN then.

I literally have 89.9-90.1 in all of my classes for which I have a grade. :/

Also, they make you take the CAHSEE in 10th grade. I mean, why bother with 11th and 12th after that?

Still, I don’t believe you should move onto the next grade if you aren’t proficient in a subject compared to the rest of your state.

Yes. A standard needs to be set. The FCAT (Florida’s equivalent I’m presuming) tests the MINIMUM that one needs to move onto the next grade level. Honestly, if you’re having issues with the FCAT, you’re having a lot of issues…

Okay, TAKS is so goddamn easy it’s a crime. Still, it’s easy to us because we’re used to it. Privite school kids, even the brightest, going into TAKS for the first time fail because they aren’t used to the structure. I know it seems easy and open to us but they’re just not used to it and it take a few years while we’ve been doing this same meaningless exam since 4th grade. Also it’s incredibly unfair to ESL kids because it’s only in english and hard as heck when that’s not your first language. In TX there are a lot of hispanics, first generation, that have difficulty comprehending english and it’s unfair that there isn’t another option like with SATs and TOELs. I personally kinda find that a bit racist because they don’t claim english as the national language yet to graduate high school you have to speak in advanced english.

So I don’t like TAKs, the interim tests are harder and somehow have a higher passing rate in my school and I think it’s due to less stress. I’d prefer a passing of 3/4 of all interim tests instead in order to pass the grade.

Also, I have straight perfect scores in all my TAKS except the writing (though commended in all). Just felt like throwing that out there that I’m not one of those that fail. Also, I’m a SENIOR! So I’ll be out at canyon lake next week.
