ah you guys are the best. I joined the SCEA thread late but I still remember reading your convos before i got my early decision. Y’all gave me a good laugh. good to see everyone came back to this thread…it was epic! No thread has been like this one throughout the entire process…

anyways, congrats to everyone, wherever you go!
(I got deferred–>accepted)

After going to Admit Weekend, I’m thinking about which type of housing I want.

I definitely don’t want FroSoCo, so the options are All freshmen and 4-class.

I have heard that 4-class is a nice atmosphere and you get the guidance/help of upperclassmen but I have not personally seen that much interaction between them, so quietness would be the main positive. Also, the main Freshmen residence, Roble, has nicer lounges, etc. It has the 3-room (2 bedroom, 1 study) 4 roommate set-up.

On the other hand, Freshmen housing is louder, has a more vibrant student life with all the freshmen parties at those places, and people say they meet a lot of friends that they know for years. People say its great to have “the freshman experience”. The rooms are single-room doubles.

I know 1 person who says she wishes she chose all-freshmen housing. Everyone else likes the choice they made (whether it is all freshmen or 4-class).

Any other current students or ProFros want to give their opinion about which you prefer?

I really enjoyed staying with a fellow ProFro and two hosts in a single-room double at Twain (all-freshman housing) during Admit Weekend.

I don’t know enough about FroSoCo to comment, but it doesn’t seem to fit too well with me. Typically <100 students choose FroSoCo IIRC, which means that you’ll form a close environment, but at the same time it may be difficult to “choose” your friends. Essentially, it would be far more difficult to match you up with the perfect roommate in FroSoCo than it would through all-freshman housing. Also, the dorms are way too far off campus.

I don’t know much about 4-class either, but I can imagine it’s fine. The reason I’m leaning towards all-freshman is that Freshman year is the only year you’ll have the opporunity to be in said housing. You can always choose to switch Sophomore, Junior or Senior year and experience FroSoCo or 4-class. But only Freshman year can you choose all-freshman.

From what I’ve seen, the all-freshman dorms foster a truly “vibrant” environment, like you said. Everyone gets to know everyone else, you’re all facing the same challenges at the same time, the parties are great, etc. Sure there’s no one to “mentor” you about the best classes/profs, but isn’t this something you should find out on your own? And sure the rooms aren’t that great… But this is college – what do you expect? I also found the single-room doubles to be spacey enough for comfortable living – not ideal, but just fine.

Re: FroSoCo–just to clarify, it isn’t located off campus at all, though it is a couple of minutes further from the main quad than most other dorms, and about as far as FloMo. I’m also not sure it would be much harder to wind up with a great roommate matchup at FroSoCo, given that it has a pretty self-selected group of students in the first place. I’ve heard there’s plenty o’ bonding that goes on in that residence as well. And: it is adjacent to Ricker dining, which many people say has some of the best dining hall food.
