I can see many of you are stressing about admissions because of rejection from ivies… I just wanted to remind you all that success can be found at any school you go to! There is no set formula to reach success… I myself will most likely be denied from Stanford and will be attending my state school, but I plan on making the best of it. Tomorrow night, no matter the outcome, don’t forget that a school is only what you make of it! I’m rooting for every single one of you to get in and hope that, if a negative outcome finds you, you don’t let it get to you too much! Good luck everyone
thank you @Tannison
Best wishes for you all!!!
@writernwriters It is totally possible to get into Stanford and not get into the Ivys. I got into Princeton but was waitlisted from Harvard today (lol basically rejected, but I was flattered, nonetheless), and I had a friend get rejected from every Ivy two years ago who now goes to Stanford. Anything is possible.
^ I wish that’s the case for me lol
@Princetonian1013 Wow, congratulations! I wish you all the best in your future endeavors at either Stanford or Princeton, whichever you end up attending. I can tell you’re a super talented, nice, unique individual who deserves it.
I really hope I get into Stanford tomorrow. It’s always been my dream, but then I’m sure it’s been everyone else’s as well. I’m trying to force myself to think of something else - it’s just such a difficult time we’re all going through
@tonjanaenae I applied with two art portfolios (one for photography and one for architecture), and for the longest time, I swore that was what got me admitted. However, Stanford has the admissions officers send letters to the admitted students, and mine said that, while my portfolios were impressive, it was really my essays (specifically intellectual vitality and what matters to me) that, in more eloquent terms, got me in.
And I totally agree that the humanities are misunderstood as being easier than STEM fields. Sometimes the hardest questions are the ones that cannot actually be perfectly answered– the ones that are open-ended and require hours and hours of thought, discussion, and debate in order for any sort of consensus– be that personal or universal, temporary or somewhat perminant– to be reached. The humanities, in their squishy maliability and lack of concrete proof, are beautifully adaptable and, more importantly, arguable… sometimes answers and imperminant and, best of all, nonexistent. That’s the best part about studying the humanities– you have to be okay with the fact that an answer to a question may only result in another question or, better yet, no answer at all.
Anyway, Cath in College is great. I’d love to meet you in PA if your ever near campus. Good luck on your decision!!!
@accept2017 HELLO! I feel really special that I was able to make you happy. Don’t give up hope on your decision, though… you never know.
@writernwriters Thank you so much. I know it’s hard to take your mind off the approaching decision (no joke– I had 4 hours between the end of school and my REA decision and I attempted to watch 20 different movies but couldn’t sit through any of them because I was so nervous… I ended up pacing up and down the halls shaking…), but what helped me was the conclusion that they have already made the decision and, in the end, in a few years, I would be happy no matter where I ended up. It’s really hard to see it now but people have always told me that you make your college experience and I guess I just have to believe it… not sure if that helps at all but it’s something to think about. Nonetheless, let’s be honest— the nerves SUCK!
I will, with near certainty, be attending Stanford. I have grown up with Princeton U. 200ft from my front door (apartment door, that is) and I think it’s just time to get away.
By the way, thank you for your kind words. I’ve worked really hard my whole life, but I also appreciate that I just got really lucky in this whole process. In the end, it’s all a big game, and sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. It could have just as easily gone the other way for me, but I’m so grateful that it worked out in my favor.
@Top10Squad Good luck next year. Start apps early, get your Common App done over the summer, know that submitting an arts portfolio means that you have to submit your app early (I didn’t know that and I found out on Oct. 11th that it was actually due the 15th… and I hadn’t done any of the essays. I took that week off from school. It was so horrible and stressful!!! Don’t be me!), and just be confident that you are well prepared for this process. It will all work out.
By the way, I agree that the interdisciplinary aspect of Stanford is wonderful.
does anyone know if Stanford send an email saying that the application status is updated?
Good luck to everyone!!!
Stanford will send an email saying there is an update on your admissions portal
Good luck everyone! This thread has kept me hyped, positive, and realistic for like the last few months. I hope we all hear good news tomorrow
@chiisai you mean today, technically, right? decisions come out on 31st?
@Princetonian1013 Wow… the way you write! So eloquent and relieving on these times. Goals. Keep doing it (more so in the farm)!
Your style makes me want to screenshot your posts and use them as lock screen for the decision tomorrow. Thanks!!
good luck everyone! Thanks for creating this awesome space to complain, freak out and vent. Its been awesome! Hope we all hear the news we desire tomorrow and if not, realize that this is a ridiculously qualified bunch of people and completing the Stanford app is an accomplishment on its own!
After a deluge of waitlists (10 from today alone!), I honestly cannot wait for this to be over. Good luck to everyone, and I hope you all have better luck than I did haha!
Best of luck everyone!! It’ll be the last school for some of us to hear back from… and the waiting game is done tomorrow!!
@whatifbus Thank you so much. Writing is kind of my thing… I even wrote my entire “What matters to you and why?” essay about it!
Good luck again, everyone!!!
@Princetonian1013
Very cool – I thought that we were only allowed one portfolio (I submitted visual art: drawing/painting). So you had to apply all the way back on October 15! Judging by your well-worded responses, I bet your essays were a joy to read.
Exactly! I have full faith that there are innumerable essays whose complexity parallel that of any differential equation… Not only does the study of the arts and humanities afford intellectual exercise through mind-stretching questions that can be answered in a number of ways, but as you said, these questions are malleable and arguable. They require nuanced writing skills, creativity, and some kind of crazy ability to express ideas effectively (something that you seem to have definitely mastered; I’m still working on it :)). They require much discernment, too. And study of the humanities is sometimes the only medium through which find some kind of solution to the modern-day problems that society finds itself in. I guess that’s why we call it the humanities… Anyway, thanks for your response – it is much appreciated! It was very nice talking to someone who also appreciates the arts and humanities as fields equal in rigor and importance to STEM. #equalityinfieldsofstudy heh
Well, thanks again! I live in NorCal and actually will be around PA soon for dr appts, so who knows – maybe I’ll see ya around! I hope you have a great finish to your senior year!
