Some perspective from a veteran – a parent who has been through college admissions with
oldest child --graduated Stanford / now finishing up law school at top 3 school
youngest child – rejected from Stanford --current Vanderbilt undergraduate rewarded academically and financially for merit
middle child-- never applied to Stanford-- graduated state university / now very successfully employed
ALL are doing incredibly well because they found a place that was right for them and capitalized on all opportunities –
Regardless of whether you are accepted or rejected from Stanford – find a way to excel whereve you go – there is no one path !!!
Make yours
Seriously, though, a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who got in. You should be so, so proud and throw yourself a party. Pat yourself on the back.
For those of us in the reject club, you will be successful wherever you go! Submitting an application to Stanford is an achievement in itself. Good luck to everyone in the future and for those of you applying next year
@potterfan Congrats to your brother. I am just curious as this is my first time going through this college process, so asking this question. If your brother got into Harvard via SCEA, what is the reason for applying to many other top schools? For financial reasons? For curiosity? Don’t people usually apply SCEA because they know that’s their first choice? I would think Harvard would offer pretty much the same financial aid as other top schools or even better, so financially there is not that much difference.
@websensation Initially, he was going to apply to Stanford early, but he figured he had a better chance at Harvard. He got in, but he didn’t know what he wanted to do after school. He knows he likes science, but he has no specific major in mind, so he wanted to keep his options open, so he applied to other college that he might like more than H (if he got in).
Actually, I did the same thing last year. I got into Stanford early, but I applied to Harvard, Yale, MIT and Duke. I ended up getting rejected by Duke and waitlisted at Yale.
Your parents must be really smart to raise at least two kids who get into to so many top schools. I guess Harvard was not really his number one choice then.
I met a parent at a Stanford REA reception for admitted students and parents who told me she had first kid who went to Stanford and the second kid went to UCB. The kid who went to UCB was always stressed and unhappy whereas the kid who went to Stanford was always happy even though both were similarly happy or unhappy before college. Because of this, she did everything in her power to persuade her 3rd kid to get into and go to Stanford. That made a deep impression on me.
For those of you rejected, keep your head up and never forget the hard work you put in and the sacrifices you have made to get where you are. You may not be going to Stanford this fall, but i’m sure that there is a reasons for this. You learn from these lessons and push forward. You have big things in store and don’t forget that YOU ARE AMAZING.
@callmegray Congrats! Glad to see you got in, because I was deferred as well. And I was also lucky enough to be admitted! I don’t think financial aid is out yet; it says by April 1, so check tomorrow.
