Stanford Class of 2021 Applicant Discussion

I just did a list (and I got in REA this year, for what it’s worth).

By the way, if people have questions, I’d love to answer them.

Hey guys! I just had a question about the mid year report. If your counselor submits it on the common app after you’ve already submitted your applications of course, are the schools you apply to (including Stanford) able to access it? Or does your counselor have to individually send the report to all the schools you applied to? Feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

@pinkkbabee – Schools can access the midyear report from the Common App but you might need to make sure your school uploads it.

@CA1543 - Okay, thanks for the response!

Welcome!

How popular of a major is Science, Technology and Society? Is it true that it is easier to be accepted with some majors than others?

@fhgeogng As of 2014, it was the fourth most popular major at Stanford. So it’s pretty popular.

just finished typing up my rd application! gonna look over it one more time tomorrow then i’ll finally submit it : )

also, is anyone else here applying to the cs + x program?

I applied MechE/SymSys/Geophysics (since I am very interested in all three, however different they may be).

@fhgeogng to be honest, I don’t think the major of interest you put on your application affects your chance of being accepted at all. Keep in mind the question on the app is “What academic program at Stanford interests you the most?”, not “What major are you applying as?”. Freshmen come in undeclared, and Stanford knows that students will change their minds quickly. A friend of mine put BioE as his #1 interest on his app, and now he is seriously considering a humanities major.

Some say that the admissions officers want to see you have ECs related to the interest(s) you list, but I doubt it makes a difference. All 3 interests I put were STEM, and I got accepted having only 1 STEM-related EC. So don’t worry about the major

tfw you realize Stanford is your best application but you have no chance of getting in :))

@scarletwitchx

Lol! This is so me…

Anyone know how competitive the Earth Systems major is compared to the rest of the school?

I’m in the same situation. I loved my Stanford app so much, but with a 4% acceptance rate, things aren’t looking too great

@321college123 read post #1790 right above yours. Answers your question about the competitiveness of ANY major

I submitted two days ago but I have not yet received a confirmation email from Stanford (only the one from Common App). Is this normal? I thought I was supposed to get an email regarding the applicant portal and how I can login. (yes, i checked the spam folder)

Totally my opinion but I think your expressed interest in a major or field of study is hugely important. Partly it helps make your application “add up” so that if you have done a lot of extracurriculars in a particular subject and you show interest in that area of study, you seem consistent.

Partly it helps Stanford “build a class.” You can bet they are not wanting to take all pre-meds or all CS students in their graduating class. They want a well rounded class with a diversity of interests. AND they want the students to support the school’s diverse offerings, which includes perhaps less glamorous majors these days such as English, History, Geography, Anthropology, etc, not the just hot majors of today, which right now are all techie it seems…

Just my 2c.

Hey guys are any of you also experiencing the problem where the portal doesn’t say your test scores are in? I sent mine in a while back and it’s weird that they’re not up yet

Hey guys, is the New SAT appearing on your portal as “SAT R”?
