Stanford/GPA questions

Okay so im STARTING freshman year with an A- in pap algebra and a B and a B- in spanish one and two. My question is is it still possible to obtain a 4.0 and if so how? And also i know stanford accounts for gpa differently so would my A- just be an A? Also would they even take the spanish class into account or would it be thrown out like P.E.? Thanks please get back to me ASAP

Stanford does not include Freshman grades in their GPA calculation.
Admission to Stanford is not all about GPA and test scores.
Spanish is a core academic course so it will be included in your GPA calculation after Freshman year.

You can get a 4.0 GPA if you get all A’s from now on, but never a 4.0 UW if you include 9th grades in your GPA.

Well i took the classes 8th grade summer and 8th grade so if i got all a’s freshman sophmore junior and senior would it be possible?

Anything is possible, but do not get fixated on any particular school this early in your HS career. Things change and people change. Stanford has the lowest acceptance rate of any university in the country, so many applicants with perfect GPA’s and tests scores are rejected every year. Do your best, take classes that interest you and do EC’s that you enjoy. Do not tailor your HS resume for one particular college.

THANKS! But what i was really asking was is it possible to achieve the 4.0 uw with A’s from freshman to senior year. I know how unlikely it is for me to get into Stanford just thought I’d raise my standards. LOL!

No you cannot get a 4.0 at your school with a B.

“Stanford does not include Freshman grades in their GPA calculation.”

OP, this “cart before the horse” that many 9th and 10th graders do drives me nuts. Kids who want Stanford, Wharton, MIT and other tops, are already fretting…

…but haven’t even begun to explore what the colleges say. Tippy tops like kids who have their own “get up and go.”

Whether you can get solid A grades from now on, we can’t predict. How a series of grades over 3 or 4 years calculates to a uw GPA is simple math.

And how your high school reports any classes before 9th is a question for your GC. But you should know, middle school is not an adcom concern.

As stated above, you cannot get a 4.0 unweighted GPA if you have 2 B’s. If you get all A’s from now on, you can still be a competitive applicant for many schools including Stanford. GPA is only one part of a college application. Do your best and at the end of Junior year then see where you stand in terms of GPA.

^ that’s if the hs transcript includes courses before 9th began in the 9th record. Some won’t. And whether they include summer school just before 9th in gpa. Some don’t. (I can’t tell if “8th grade summer” means just now or before 8th. Colleges won’t look at pre hs, but it may be in the hs GPA the GC reports. )

Right now, OP needs to id the right resources. That starts with his GC and the colleges’ web sites. Get the right info before building a false foundation of assumptions.

@Hopefulteen23

@lookingforward The answer is no. HS courses count towards gpa unless expunged from transcripts.

@Luska19 are you speaking for OP’s high school? He’s talking about pre-hs courses.

The OP stated starting HS with grades in 2 high school courses and grades. Doesn’t matter if they are pre-hs if they are hs credit courses.

Its goung to depend on the hs.

Ok then, to answer what I think the OP is asking, the answer to if you get a B in any HS course and it counts towards your gpa then there is no way to have a 4.0 in hs. Colleges who don’t count 9th grade grades could recalculate your gpa and you could end up a 4.0.

Ok. But not all colleges recalculate. (Those I know that do are publics.) A tippy top private will look at the transcript and see rigor, distribution, and grades. Stanford may ignore + or -, they don’t consider freshman year in decision making. But as an admit is more than gpa, why would they even need to recalc? The GC will report the hs gpa, how rigorous he/she feels the applicant’s courseload was/is, and provide some written feedback.

OP, just read up on what Stanford and the colleges at its level do say.

Yes i meant Pre HS and im going to high school this year with a 90 in PAP-Algebra 1 an 85 in Spanish 1 and an 86 in Spanish 2 so with that there is a zero possibility of a 4.0? I tried to calculate my gpa with sophmore and freshman year with the assumption i would get all A’s and it ended up being a 4.0 so is that wrong?

Also would retaking the classes senior year help? Because I would love to atleast make the B’s a’s

You want to retake Span 1 and 2 as a senior?
Why so much focus on grades? You haven’t begun 9th yet, have no idea what hs holds, how you’ll thrive or struggle. You don’t know what matters to top schools. You have no hs activities yet.

Talk to your GC. Get the right details. No one here knows how your hs does things.
