Stanford Roommate Essay

As a transfer applicant, I’m writing my Stanford roommate essay based on an experience I’ve had with my roommate in college so far. I found that I hum or sing quite often, my roommate sometimes joining me. And by singing, I mean horribly attempting old Britney Spears lyrics, Backstreet Boys melodies, and a lot of other huge hits from the past decade that I never listened to while they were popular. Sometimes it’d cause us to spontaneously sing snippets over the course of the next week or so. This happened a lot when we were studying for an exam or writing a difficult essay, him getting very stressed out. I relate these (after presenting an anecdote) to how I’m very calm under pressure and stress and do silly things to lighten my mood, as well as others’, and take some deep breaths before refocusing on my goal.

Hopefully this description captures the gist of what I’m writing. Any thoughts?

I think your subject matter is certainly unique, but as with all writing, it really comes down to what you’ve actually written that decides whether this will work in your favor. I personally believe the roommate essay is Stanford’s secret way of rooting out people who go into the admissions process perhaps too proudly and end up coming off as immature. This is not to say that novelty and maturity are mutually exclusive though! Send it over and I’ll give you my two cents.
