Stanford Summer Humanities Institute 2020

SHI finally sent an email and I thought it would be the admission decision but no…now they’re saying the decisions will be out on May 12

to accepted people they sent an email about the changes being made, btw. the program’s now 2 weeks (not 3) and 2 classes have been canceled (plus i think the curriculums have been altered to deal with the change in resources).

do you guys plan to take one or multiple courses? seeing that i’ll be at home anyways, i’m considering checking the box for interest in multiple courses. (i haven’t received word of admission yet)

U guys know if the courses are still taught by the professors or just graduate students? On the website, it says just one live session each day with TAs. Are the professors going to be involved at all?

I checked the box for multiple courses just to keep that option open, but I’m also waiting on admissions decisions from some other summer programs I applied to, so I’m not sure what I’ll do exactly

@tjay58 the individual course pages still say they’re being taught by professors! i think the live classes are by TAs but there will be pre-recorded lectures and one-on-one chats w/ the professors.

@tjay58 On the website is says that aside from those sessions with the TAs there will also be lots of other things to do each day and lectures from or meetings with the professors

From my understanding, the professors will only meet us digitally live, for the 1 on 1 sessions. They will post video lectures, but we will not be attending live. The 1.5 hours is for the TA lead discussion I believe.

I chose yes for interest for attending two different programs, but it feels a little weird now that all the courses are open for everyone to choose, so I’m not sure if they will give priority for the people applying for their originally accepted courses.

Heyy I get into the same program, can you add me to the gc if you made one?

I get distracted so easily watching pre-recorded lectures ugh. I wish we could have longer hours of live lectures that allow some participation instead of just one hour of discussion.

does anyone know if you were already accepted for one class, are you guaranteed admission into that class’s online version? (even if you select interest in multiple, for example)

Yea let’s make a group chat. I don’t know if College Confidential allows private dms… do you want to connect over discord or something, and we can share the rest of our information (Instagram, snapchat etc.) later?

hey everyone! if anyone from this thread wants to join an SSHI Discord server, I can try to DM you a link (CC’s pretty strict about posting links in comments, idk about DMs though)

even though the program’s been moved online, it’ll still be nice to interact and get to know each other. applicants are welcome as well! but it’ll probably be more fun to join if you’re actually accepted

Yes, I would definitely want to join the server. How can I dm you on CC? I am switching classes because my class is not online this year.

I looked at the page again. I don’t understand why they can’t have a few hours of live lecture and record for those who can’t come. My 2 cents: now the material is shrunk, and there’s only one-hour discussion per day for only two weeks, for 3000 dollars. I personally don’t feel it’s worth it.

@sparkatzz I definitely agree that the price seems less justifiable now. I’m lucky that the cost is not an issue, so I’m still going to attend (honestly, partly because I don’t want to waste the effort I put into the application back in the wintertime), but I can’t help but be disappointed.

It looks like I won’t be able to attend the online alternative unfortunately due to the lack of financial aid. I had gotten a full scholarship based on my needs, and they were unable to provide any this year due to the lack of funding (apparently it all comes from their residential program). I’m really sad since I’ve been really looking forward to this, but I wish you all the best of luck. Have fun in my stead :).

Has anyone received the decision yet?

I have gotten a decision but there seems to be an issue regarding my course selection because I got rejected from the program according to the new update oof. I was previously admitted but had to do a new course because mine was unavailable.

I just got mine. I originally got into the Age of Jefferson, but this time I got into Revolutions. Did anyone get two decisions? I did say I was interested in two sessions, but it seems like I only made it into 1.
