Stanford Summer Humanities Institute 2020

@GreenOrchid they sent out an email to the email address you put on the application

@sparkatzz me too, we’ll be having classes in the middle of the night

With the rapid slowing and decline in COVID-19 cases, do you think that there is any chance that Stanford would reverse course on their decision to go online? They seem to be the only program to have made that decision this far out from their start of the program. The on-campus experience is invaluable.

@CubbieBlue16 I hope so because I completely agree that the on-campus experience is invaluable (especially as someone like me, who’s never gone to a residential summer program before and was excited for the opportunity). However, I doubt they’ll reverse their decision, seeing as they have already said they’ll offer refunds and started working on the online version. I think it’s too late now to go back to in-person.

@happydude25844 I also got into Racial Identity in the American Imagination! It’s pretty easy to find the course’s syllabus online, and I imagine we’ll be spending some time going through Stanford’s archives, which I’m really excited for!!

@andyxuhy Your humanities journal seems to be just a college resume booster for you and your friends. No offense, but a lot of the content posted on your journal doesn’t seem to high-quality and publication-worthy; some of the “literature” papers seem to even be from school essays that lack nuance have a bunch of grammar mistakes. Is there any peer-review or other process to look over the content or quality of the submissions? All of the “publications” in the first issue is also published just published by your co-founders.

@andyxuhy you just said that non-Asians work very inefficiently—I think that in itself is not only unprofessional but also pretty condescending and problematic. Also, why do you feel the need to mandate a non-Asian requirement for interested schools? That whole thing feels very strange to me. And isn’t it quite arrogant to say that you don’t need any other awards for college since you supposedly have enough on your resume?

Andy Xu of Kent School: Did you really just go on the record as saying non-Asians don’t work as efficiently?

I am flabbergasted.

Hey all! I attended the SHI Evil session two summers ago, so if you have any questions, I’d love to be of help!

Hey @imaginary2003 , that’s awesome! Sorry that I’ll never be able to meet with you in person like we were supposed to over the summer :(. Still excited for the online program as well, so I’ll see you there!

Didn’t they say that the decision is supposed to be out mid-April? I wonder what’s taking so long

@alittlepollia Same… I’ve been checking my email so often

I find it concerning that you don’t see a problem with this statement–I’m a student at one of the boarding schools you’re partnered with, and I can assure you that there are perfectly capable and responsible writers that aren’t Asian in my school, and I’m quite sure this holds true for all schools.

I recommend you rethink some of your statements. Just my two cents.

I think maybe this thread isn’t exactly the place to promote your work. It’s more of the current 2020 SSHI student’s application discussion. I understand that you participated last year but maybe find a different platform to promote them instead?

@andyxuhy As another kent student I’d like to testify to the existence of efficient non-Asians and the possibility of making real friends at school. Also, it’s none of your business what other ppl care about. I don’t understand how “sports kids don’t care about academics” has anything to do with you. It’s also very stereotypical of you to say that. Next time when you make comments, please don’t throw kent school under the bus because your personal opinions don’t represent us all.

Also a Kent student here. Just wanted to say that I personally have met people of all races at Kent that are amazing friends, smart, kind, funny, and most importantly, very efficient. One of the things I love the most about Kent is that we as a community try not to generalize people based on their race, gender or personal interests, and it is very unfortunate that certain members of our community fail to do so. Best wishes to everyone reading this.

@Jusmingos yes efficient is the keyword here, the absolute golden quality for human survival and journal advertisement.

Let’s try not to derail the thread too much. On that note, has anyone heard anything from SHI yet?

@sparkatzz nope. been checking my email wayyy too much

I’m hoping it’ll be out tomorrow? It’s been a month now
