Stanford?

Hi. In advance, I’d like to mention that I’m completely new here, so if I’m posting in the wrong place to ask this type of question, I’m really sorry.

: )

So, here I am:

Caucasian Female

Unweighted Average: 94.4% (My school doesn’t use the 4.0 scale; I don’t know how to convert it either)

Weighted Average: 97.7%
Top 10% of my suburban public school.

Classes

9th: Honors Global, Honors Math 10, Honors Biology

10th: Honors Global II, Honors Math 11, Honors Chemistry, Honors Spanish III

11th: AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP American, AP English Language and Composition, Honors Precalc, Honors Spanish IV, Pre-AP Art

12th: AP Calculus AB, AP Physics, AP Macroeconomics, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Art, Honors Spanish V

SAT I Scores

Reading 700

Math 720

Writing 700

(These scores were the lowest out of all of my practice, but I was really nervous, and nauseated – I decided not to retake the SAT I after my ACT score came back.)

SAT II Biology Score

780

(I’m taking the Math Level II in October, I think?)

ACT Score

35

Afterschool Clubs

9th: SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Club, Asian Club (my best friend is Korean), Ultimate Players Club (Frisbee).

10th: SADD Club, World of Difference Club, National Art Honor Society, Asian Club, Ultimate Players Club, National Art Honor Society

11th: SADD Club (Treasurer), Environmental Club (Treasurer), Memory Team, National Art Honor Society (Treasurer, School Beautification: Murals and 100+ hours of community service), Habitat for Humanity Club (President), World of Difference Club, Literary Magazine Member/Contributor, National Math Honor Society, Mock Trial, National Honor Society

12th: Same as 11th grade, although hopefully with some more leadership positions.

Extracurriculars/Summer Activities

9th: Art / Babysitting for various families.

10th: Art / Volunteered at a nature center where I interacted with the public and gave educational talks about the animals

11th: Pre-AP Art / Paid internship with the environmental planning department for local government

12th: AP Art / Volunteering at the nature center again, working for the planning department again, working at a coffee shop

There are probably some things I’m forgetting at the moment, but you get the general idea.

Any and all advice is welcome, and here are other schools I’m considering:

University of California Berkeley
University of Pennsylvania
Bowdoin College
Hamilton College
Johns Hopkins University
New York University
Pomona University
Wellesley College

Also, I should mention that I’m interested in Psychology and Neurology.
If anyone has any other suggestions as to where I should be looking, let me know.

Thanks!

I think you have a decent shot at Stanford. Your academic qualifications are impressive so I’d try to write good essays that display your personality. If Stanford’s your first choice, apply Early action.

Do you think that it’s necessary for me to take the SAT Math Level II? or would Math I suffice?

With Stanford no one is a shoe in. That being said i’d say you have as good a shot as any. Just write awesome essays and hope for the best. Good luck.

Definitely take Math II (if you’re ready of course). Stanford strongly recommends it and it would be best. But if you don’t think you’re going to perform well on it, take another one.

Does anyone have any input as to whether or not I can get into the other colleges on my list?

if you are interested in Neurology you should add Brown to your list.

^Stanford only recommends taking Math 2 over Math 1, but on its website it says that it doesn’t care which two subject tests you take, but that you should take at least 2.

How did you only take 3 classes your freshman year??

I only listed the classes that were honor or AP classes. I took 7 or 8 classes total freshman year.

You have a fair shot - but, keep in mind that Stanford is a VERY difficult school to get into. Are you involved in any sports? Stanford admits a lot of good athletes despite the fact that other (non-athletes) get better grades than them. You may want to take you SAT over again. If you were nervous - you might be more comfortable the 2nd time and get a better score. Make sure your application, including your essay is excellent. All the luck to you!

I did play some sports, but not at the Varsity level.
8th, 9th and 10th grade: JV Feild Hockey
9th and 10th grade: JV Lacrosse

Also, I’m sure I would get a better score if I took it a second time, but I figure my ACT score will suffice. Not to mention that it’s now impossible to take it again before I start applying, keeping in mind that I have to take the Math II or Lit SAT II in October.
