Starting a club

My school has tons of clubs already established; the one which doesn’t exist at my school yet and which I’m thinking of starting is Habitat for Humanity. I want to start this club and stay as its president until I graduate. But I’ve never ever started a club before, nor have I been a president/leader of some sort, let alone being an active member of a club. Once you become the club’s president, what would be the time commitment and responsibility, if you want to have great things to write about on applications and talk about during interviews?
Also, I want to make sure that I have what it takes to be a good president/club-operator and that it will not interfere with my grades and other important things.

fifteen hours, forty three minutes, and twenty five seconds per week.

Depends on a lot of things (just so happens that Leadership theory and application is one of my non-medical interests).

There are many ways to lead, and to be certain, it’s a skill. No one is born a great leader. Usually the most difficult task for inexperienced leaders is trying to do it all. Delegation is not easy to do because it requires giving up control. Finding that balance takes time. And of course, when you’re the only one in the group (which you might be for at least a short period of time) there’s no one to delegate to.

Some thoughts about this -

1) Go to your Office of Student Involvement and see what the process is for starting a club. Usually some paperwork, some by-laws have to be written (they may have standardized forms for use), you might have to get the organization approved by your student government, etc - but they’ll be able to tell you the process and give you the paperwork.

2) Contact the National Office of HfH and see what their requirements are for starting a local chapter. They’ll be able to help you too.

3) Find some friends who are interested in joining! Split up the work. Maybe two people will step up within the group and you’ll decide to have co-presidents. The big thing is, you can’t be selfish when starting an organization, if you want it to be successful and survive after you’ve left campus. You have to think what’s best for the organization and it’s long term viability. Of course if you just want the group for your own personal gain and your medical school applications, then forget what I just said.

u may not be able to find even a minute to waste or u may find as bdm said, 15 hrs, 43 min, and 25s /week (:D)! It depends whether u truly want to do this, if you think you are all for it…then, just get chartered, and start talking w/ local chapters and stuffs. Initially it is overwhelming, but then, it’ll be really smooth.
