Starting Architect Jobs

I will be starting at Boston Architectural College this fall in an academic only program. After the first year you start working in a concurent program of working full time in a firm during the day and 2-3 classes a week at night. I was just curious if anyone knows what kind of jobs architects start at. Would I look for a job as some kind of apprentice, or small projects? It’s quite a general question, but I kind of want to know where I should start.

Really depends on what skills you have. If you are good at Autocad or Sketchup, you will probably get opportunities to work on projects. If you are just starting to learn these programs, then odd jobs around the office; filing shop drawings, helping to put together marketing materials, putting together drawing sets, etc. The more skills you have the more interesting the tasks you will get to do. BAC is very professionally oriented, so I suspect they will get you up to speed quickly.

What you are looking for is an internship, and whoever hires you will decide what it is you are fit for. I would honestly contact BAC and express your concern about finding the first job: they should be well practiced in helping their students out on that front, since it’s the major unique feature of the school.

Thanks for the help Rick and Larationalist. I worked with autocad for 3 years in high school. Mainly one year learning it, then two years experimenting with it. Also they do help you get a job, as it is a requirment of me in the curriculum.
