I want to start engineering as a sophomore although I am currently an international studies major. I go to a top 12 school that is known for its hard curve.
During my freshmen year i took political classes, language, etc but no math or hard science.
If I start out in engineering, I will be in Calc I.
I am currently interested in my school’s general engineering major. Also, is that a bad idea? Should I specialize?

If you want to do engineering, give it a shot. You should probably look into the program to make sure you’ll be able to complete it in time, but that’s specific to your school.

On general engineering: Chances are, once you start taking classes, you’ll find an area you want to get into, or learn more about. It’ll probably have a lot of the same core classes as general engineering (physics, maths, etc) so if you decide you want to go into a more specific field later it shouldn’t be too difficult to change, at least in terms of coursework. (I’m not sure what your school’s policy on changing majors is.)

I guess if you are interested, research the program in your school. think about what you may want to do, if you will be delayed in graduation etc (though id stay a little longer and do something I love then stay shorter and do something i did not love)

thanks guys. any other advice?

Check two things:

Whether you can administratively switch into the engineering major, or whether you need to face a competitive admission process at your school.

Whether you will be able to construct a schedule that will let you complete the major in your remaining six semesters, or whether one or more additional semesters will be needed due to long prerequisite sequences. If you would need additional semesters, be sure to consider the cost and financial aid implications; check whether alternatives like taking courses in the summer (possibly at a local community college) or taking greater than the normal number of courses or credits per semester are options for you.
