I hope someone is knowledgeable about this – my D is starting finishing up her BS in Accounting this semester. Rather than returning to school, she is doing an internship at one of the Big 4 in January - she will return for 2 more semesters in September of 2019 to finish her 5th year (to get her credits to sit for the CPA).
She received half her senior year GSL - can she get the other half in September 2019? Do we have to do another FAFSA? Are graduate students eligible for additonal GSLs?
HELP - we have 4 kids in college right now and are trying to plan.
My daughter got her BS and masters in accounting at the same time. She did it in 4 years plus summers. She also had a semester at an internship. The last year, she was considered a grad student for FAFSA. She got both diplomas at the same time. She had the grad student loan amounts available. They used her income only, not ours. Of course, since she was a grad student all she got was loans anyway, so this was not a big benefit. Our school still allowed her to count on the FAFSA college total for our other college student. I’ve heard this might not be the same elsewhere. It is a great program. She has been out for 4.5 years and is the head of the tax department for North America for a global firm.
She can only get direct loans when she is in college. For fall 2019, she needs to fill out another FAFSA (available now). If she gets a degree in Dec., then she will be a grad student.
@Debbie7452 thank you – I thought I read that as grad students they are all considered ‘independent’ - so I should have her do the FAFSA with her own income only. I believe she said she was going to be a graduate assistant so mainly she will need $$ for housing as her tuition is paid for as I understand it.
Yes, as a grad student only HER income on FAFSA. She will need a fafsa for fall 2019
If she needs money for housing then she’ll be offered federal loans for that
