Starting over, renewed point of view, and what are my chances?

Hell all,

I have been in and out of college over the last few years. I could not seem to ground myself, and I really wish that I had taken the time to float around for while-not because I don’t value formal education, but because I had not been mature enough nor had a very strong foundation of support to get me through the college experience. I have been fortunate enough to travel and have had some deeply wonderful experiences;and as a result, I have experienced a shift in thinking and overall outlook of the future. I have decided to return to school to ensure a future with greater possibilities. Now, my transcripts from way back when do not look too good. I have been looking at different UCs to apply to. I am really interested in UCSB’s global studies and french programs. I’d like to double major and take it from there. After traveling, I see the world through a different lens, and I wish to continue traveling and learning french. What sort of work do I need to do in order to secure a place at UCSB? I have looked at other schools but some are either missing global studies or french. I am immensely interested in pursuing both as majors, but I am worried that my old transcripts will inhibit me from being accepted. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks for your prompt responses :)

Need a lot more info. Where are your credis from? California community colleges, privates, other? Are you a CA resident? What is your current cumulative gpa? Number of units?

I have credits from another Uni. My GPA is below 2.0 as I withdrew from some classes and/or stop attending. I did the same at another CC but same behavior. Basically I didn’t take my classes seriously among other factors. So basically my GPA is below 2.0. I’d say that I am essentially starting over. Will I be able to recover my GPA? And yes I am CA resident.

you need to go back to community college and retake all the classes you dropped. finish the IGETC. get A’s. give yourself two years. get active on campus. volunteer.

then you may have a fighting chance.

Thank you for your responses. I registered for summer and fall classes (2011). I start summer classes on June 20th-I have a full load. I was wondering if would be possible to apply for the TAG with the two campuses I’ve considered attending upon acceptance? Also, how important is the personal statement in this scenario? I should be finished with all of my units by next summer, is it possible to attend Uni fall of 2012? Thanks for all the advice and suggestions :)

There are different requirements for each school’s TAG, but you should be fine if you meet them. The only schools that read personal statements from transfer students are UCLA and UCB. Generally, you have to finish by the spring before the fall semester which you want to transfer to. They don’t usually let you finish in the summer. If you’ll be done in summer 2012, then you should apply for spring 2013 if its open or your only choice is to apply for fall 2013
