After getting rejected by her two top choices, Swarthmore (Early Decision) and Yale (Early Action), my daughter has gotten a half dozen acceptances at University of Rochester, SUNY Geneseo (with an invitation to apply for the Honors Program), SUNY Binghamton, Brandeis (but with really lousy financial aid), Clark, and the Macaulay Honors Program at CUNY (free tuition, free room and board for 2/4 years, free laptop and money for internships or travel abroad…aaaah), my daughter is starting to feel better. She is still waiting for Oberlin, Syracuse, Harvard (based on her other rejections…I sincerely doubt it) and Haverford. But we do have some options, including the financial safeties (both SUNYs and Macaulay Honors).

It was 100% against Yale policy for your daughter to apply to both Yale SCEA and Swarthmore ED

We looked it up…everyone told us it was okay–one was early decision and the other was early action…there is a difference…not that it mattered…I don’t think she was going to get into Yale anyway.

SueMac: happy for your daughter’s accepts. Congrats! The Macaulay means she must have had some chops!

But if you read Yale’s policy, they have Single Choice Early Action. Only exceptions would be to the state Public university. Swarthmore wouldn’t qualify. Just an FYI so you can correct others’ actions if asked in the future. Maybe your school’s counselor?

Epic Fail right there.

Single choice lets you apply early decision somewhere else if that deadline is after you heard back from Yale. Was Swarthmore’s a late one?
