Starting to form a list to visit/research in junior year.

<p>I’m winding down on the end of my sophmore year. I was wondering what are some good colleges that I should look into and possibly visit. I’m pretty sure I want to major in something related to Middle Eastern/African/Russian studies. Possibly anthropology or international affairs. I’m used to small town and small campus (the “village” I live in is only 700 people) so I’m looking for small schools. My stats are…
GPA - 3.98 (probably a 4.0 after this quarter)
Rank - 1/22
Projected ACT score according to the PLAN test - 26-30 (I’m positive I can score higher, I’ve been studying like a nazi for the ACTS, and I"ll take them next October)
ExtraCurriculars - Track (3 years), Basketball (2 years), Class Treasurer, Choir, TATU, SkillsUSA (we have no clubs etc. at our school), Science Fair, Yearbook, FCCLA
Other Activities - LMI Youth Group where i go out with other christian youth and do volunteer projects., Page at North Dakota Democratic Convention, HOBY Leadership Camp, ND Farm Bureau Leadership Seminar

Who’s Who (haha)
National Honor Roll
Honor Roll every quarter at school
USAA Achievement awards in Math, Science and English
Won a brochure design contest (don’t know if this matters)
Second Place @ State Skills USA Health Careers Knowledge Bowl

<p>Anyways, I’m going to visit some colleges next year (junior year) Here are the ones I’m planning on going to.</p>

<p>Macalester College
Carleton
UM-Morris
Oberlin
Kenyon</p>

<p>Then I’m also planning on visiting these colleges sometime before I choose a college.
Yale
Dartmouth
Vanderbilt</p>

<p>I realise all these are probably BIG time reaches, but a boy can dream. I’m told being from North Dakota also helps :S </p>

<p>Any good small schools that I should consider researching further?</p>

<p>Of the east coast schools, my advice is to go to Dartmouth, Middlebury, Williams, Amherst, Yale, Vassar, Haverford, and Swarthmore all on the same trip, starting from Boston and flying out of New York. They are all relatively close. Vanderbilt is sort of out of the way, you might want to just apply and see if you get in and your other options.</p>

<p>In the midwest I would also consider St. Olaf and Grinnell. St. Olaf is in the same town as Carleton so it is easy to see both schools while in Northfield.</p>

<p>Just out of curiousity, what exactly does studying like a nazi mean? That might not be the best way to express what you mean…</p>

<p>PS. It might be interesting to see something completely different and try living in an urban environment… just a thought.</p>

<p>Macalester, Vanderbilt and Yale have urban locations and are three good schools for a list. UM-Morris is an interesting safety. Given your sophomore status you are doing a nice job in putting a list together. You are also very smart to focus on the testing, as some selective schools will look for a small HS GPA to be reinforced by excellent test results. </p>

<p>Note that you do not have to send your ACT results to any schools until you see how you have done. Once you get results, you can send them, retake, and/or investigate SATs as another option.</p>

<p>I paid a visit and fell in love and am headed there in the fall. Small school in a small town with a Russian Studies major (one of my possible majors).</p>
