"State of Play" is worth your money

Not a perfect movie, but still a very smart, adult political thriller with a killer cast (Russell Crowe, Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren, Jeff Daniels, Robin Wright Penn, Viola Davis - I even liked Ben Affleck, and I usually don’t). Great location shots of DC. Fearless prediction: it’s a long way off and a really tough category, but I think Jason Bateman will be nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar as a sleazy political insider. He steals every scene he’s in. Ideal way to spend a rainy afternoon.

The original British version is FANTASTIC.

I highly recommend it (available through Netflix).

I thought Jason Bateman was the best thing in the movie, and Rachel McAdams the worst. I also thought it’s a bit of a rehash of familiar stories but the camera work and cinematography was wonderful.

Agree with everything above, but I did like the relationship with Cal and Della. I am also not an Affleck fan and think it was the best role he’s done. Loved Jason Bateman, didn’t recognize him at first.

My daughter saw this Fri night and LOVED it…so surprised that Jason Bateman stole the movie; when I saw the trailer, I first thought, “miscast”, but glad to hear…he certainly has come a long way (but where is Justine?? who would have thought that he would have been the one with the longer career?)

on the Haverford site, it seems the Russell Crowe character had a Haverford background in this film…

H and I saw it this morning. Midway thru, he leans over and says, “Nothing against Ben Afflect, but he really can’t act.” I really enjoyed the movie and loved the DC shots. I am thinking of organizing a Sunday morning group at my local movie house. Everyone there seems just like us: over 50, obviously not involved with the day to day of children anymore and trying to find a cheap date (probably because all our kids are away at school with all our money!). Maybe we could meet at the local bakery for a bite and then off to the show. You really can’t beat the price and you’re home by lunch! Sounds like the perfect morning to me!

ooooh, I so want to go see this. Maybe next weekend. Thanks for the push.

Dogwood, I completely agree, we saw it in the morning too after breakfast out. It was a great way to start the day.

Great movie, although I had a lot of All the President’s Men flashbacks. I found it annoying that Della always had her chin down.
