State Patty's Day?

What is the background behind this day? Also why do you spell Paddy wrong? It’s pretty hilarious to Irish people/ looks pretty uneducated for a supposed top state school. Patty is a girl lol

Its just a student drinking holiday. Every school has them. Dukes “LDOC” (last day of class) is a giant day long - but they’re a top school too. Don’t worry about it honestly, the holiday is dying off and likely wont be around more than another 2 years.

St Patrick’s day is commonly referred to as St Patty’s day. The difference from the norm is Saint vs State not Patty vs Paddy. I have never seen Paddy used at all except maybe when referring to Paddington Bear. A simple google search would have told you that, makes you look

Guys, don’t feed the ■■■■■…this is a student from another school, judging from other posts…

PSU85MOM no you are the uneducated one. It is St. Paddy’s day. Just like it is Paddy’s Irish pub or a Paddy wagon. Trust me I’m from Galway… <a href=“It's St. Paddy's Day, Not 'St. Patty's Day'”>http://gawker.com/5990788/its-st-paddys-day-not-st-pattys-day</a>

Someone obviously doesn’t have enough work to do.

The real holiday is Saint Paddy’s Day, the fake holiday is State Patty’s Day. It didn’t exist when I was at PSU so I cannot attest to the reason for the misspelling. Perhaps they didn’t know they were spelling it wrong. Perhaps they knew, but liked the extra twist differentiating it from the real holiday. Perhaps they knew, but got tired of pretentiously correcting everyone. I don’t know.

The incorrect spelling is actually pretty common in the US. To most people in this country, it is “Saint Patrick” not “Saint Padraig”, and therefore “Patty” makes more sense than “Paddy”. Is it incorrect, and therefore ignorant? Sure. Not everyone can know everything, and this falls below the level of “things important enough to know” for most Americans. Strangely, neither PSU nor (to the best of my knowledge) Cornell nor the SATs nor the AP exams devote any instructional or test time to “largely inconsequential things that a lot of people get wrong”. Of all the things I know, of all the things that PSU didn’t teach me, the correct spelling of an Irish Saint’s name and abbreviation ranks pretty darned low.

The amount of time I spent on this clearly shows how bored I am and how little there is to do in my lab. I cannot imagine how bored I would have to be to actually go onto another school’s CC forum and pick a fight over this. Is this helping you get into law school?

cosmicfish, if I could “like” your post a 1,000 times, I would!
