State recidency

Hey! I am having a really hard time understanding the state residency requirements to be able to pay in state tuition in Georgia!

I am 19 years old and grew up in Germany (my parents still live in Germany, but are American). And as far as I found out you are a resident of the state your parents live in until you are age 24 (unless you are married, have a child, …).

So I basically am not able to become a state resident (I am planning to attend community college in Atlanta, GA) until I am 24?? Or did I understand that wrong?

Thanks so much!

Each public college/university posts this information right on its website. If you can’t find it, phone or email the institution and ask them. Since you have been living overseas, it is possible that you don’t have residency in any state.

However, as a citizen, you can move to the state where you want to study, get a job, and live there for the time required to establish residency. Once you are able to demonstrate that you are self-supporting, many states will grant you in-state status for tuition and fees even though they won’t consider you independent for financial aid purposes. In most cases, you would need to be here for 12 months.

A number of US citizens living abroad have posted here at CC in recent months. If you search for their threads, you may find more information that is useful for you. Look for harmonium, lilspring, shaneobain, R3d3mpti0n, johnnyquid, MQ1993, shl, studyzone, farhan769, natalle, evzonas, and potlee

Wishing you all the best!
