Statement of Purpose for non-thesis Engineering program

I am applying to a non-thesis Master of Engineering program (Biomedical Engineering). Since there is no research involved, is it necessary to state areas of interest of my discipline (Biomedical Engineering) and mention professors that I may be interested in working with (in case of possible research)?

Also, typically how long should a statement of purpose be? One of the universities I’m applying to says that 2500 words is the limit, but I don’t think I’ll be anywhere near that many words - probably closer to the 1200-1500 word range.
