Statistically, what will next year look like?

Basically I’m curious if whether or not admissions will be more/less/as competitive as they were this year.

If they’re more competitive, what are you guys (c/o 09) doing to prepare?

I for one am definitely studying a lot harder for AP/SAT/SATII

i don’t know what it will look like. I am in 09, and I am simply going to try my best.

Disclaimer: highly speculative

The USNR ranking will subtly (and maybe overtly) impact how students view
the top 5 schools (whether it is right to do so or not) and hence where
and how they apply next year…?

I believe Princeton will slip down to 2/3, Harvard go up to 1 and Stanford
will probably share the spot with Princeton/Yale at 2/3. Caltech Ranking
will also drop. The reason is the selectivity rate from this year. (again speculative)

In order to combat this the places like Princeton and Caltech which have
slipped will increase their selectivity…

Harvard will continue to choose people with even lower SAT scores. Stanford
and Yale will continue whatever they are practising this year…

Across the board, it depends on how many schools people apply to. The number of high school graduates peaked this year, so if all other factors remain the same, acceptance rates should increase slightly.

The problem is, I think that kids graduating in 2009 are hearing about the record low acceptance rates and getting nervous. If they react the same way us 08ers did and apply to numerous schools apiece (I’m talking 10+ here), acceptance rates could hold steady or even go up, even with fewer kids applying.

However, I think what will be most telling is this year’s yield. If it turns out that yield takes a nosedive this year due to the sheer number of applications people send out, schools will be less selective next year to compensate. If yield isn’t really impacted, acceptance rates won’t be, either. We’ll see what happens when colleges start going to their waitlists.

there are reportedly 20,000 less High school seniors in class of '09 than in '08. In other words, there will be around 0.5% less seniors in '09 when you consider that over 3 million kids will be graduating this year and next. No difference in rigor of admissions.

Here are the admissions percentages for next year

Harvard: 12,532 kids will apply and 1094 will be accepted
Yale: they will accept 9.24625% of all applicants
Princeton: they will accept 10.35246% of all applicants

:)

Everything I’ve read has said that '09 is the largest graduating class in US history… like Ham, I’m in the class of '09 too, and I’m just going to try my best. Hopefully with minimal amounts of stress. :)
