Statistics for Detroit student admissions?

I have a meeting with Detroit admissions officers within the next week, but I was wondering if anyone has stats or personal accounts on Detroit students. I only know a few people that attend UMich from Detroit and they all were accepted through the Summer Bridges Program. They had high GPAs with ACT scores in the low 20s.

As a black Detroit applicant, I’m very unsure of my chances.

The best school in Detroit is Cass Tech which is a feeder to the University

As you can tell since CassTech is a feeder, then I’d guess most applicants admited would have a score 25+, but still the standards are not as high as a non-Detroit cities due obvious disadvantages students may have living there.

Kind of surprised to see Saline High School so low, considering they are ranked 4th in the state according to the school. In addition, Saline is only 10 minutes away from the campus, and many alumni and faculty from the school live in Saline

What do you mean by “have a meeting”? Like at your high school or are you driving to campus? The rep for my area just stops at school for 30 min to answer a few questions from the group. No 1 on 1 time granted. And certainly no “meeting” on the menu.

What’s your ACT score? Any AP coursework?

Forever alone, wrong on the 25+. Very wrong.

@ForeverAlone Thank you for the link! My school is much worse than Cass, haha, but I know when I receive my score, it’ll be a 25 or higher.

@alopez14 We have 2 hour workshops called “M is 4 U" where Detroit prospective students can meet to work on essays and talk with Detroit admissions counselors. The first workshop was strictly informative, but they said the rest will be more personal. The counselor for my area covers a lot of ground, but she is always there to answer our many questions. Only representatives from UMich-flint visit my school and there is no one-on-one time.

I got a 24 composite, but I’m waiting for my scores from last month. My school doesn’t offer any APs and the last person accepted from my school was two years ago, and she had to go through the Summer Bridges Program.

25+ was just an estimate, but yeah I think I being a little too forgiving. I’d imagine realistically that it be not much higher than CassTech’s average since they admit so many people.

My opinion on lowest ACT score to get in would be a 28. Last year was probably a 27.

@headed2great Are you crazy? About 5 percent of admitted students have between a 18 and 24 composite. 28 composite is the bottom 25th percentile, so I’ll estimate about 3,500 of 14,000 accepted students will have a 28 or lower.

The literal lowest, probably below 25 even. Certainly that shouldn’t mean you should expect to get in with a 25.

detpeace, 18-20 is likely reserved for athletes.

Where are you getting such specific data? “5 percent…between 18 and 24”?

Anyways, if you score a 25 you’ll be good. That’s like 96 percentile for Michigan blacks. I know 23 and 24s that are at Michigan right now.

@alopez14 I forgot about athletes.
Thanks for that information!
