Ok, my potential majors are: PoliSci, Econ, Social Welfare, Political Economy, and Peace & Conflict Studies. Some of these require/recommend either 2 or 20.

I’ve been told that for stats, the higher the numbers get, the more difficult the subject gets. From what I hear, stats isn’t an easy subject, and I’ve only taken calc for 2 years. So I don’t know which stats class to sign up for…mostly based on difficulty and the manage-ability of the class…HELP

If you want to do econ you have to take stats 20, 21, or 25. So if you are leaning towards econ slightly you should take stats 20 because they don’t accept stats 2. The difference between Stats 2 and Stats 20 is that Stats 20 is significantly harder in my opinion because you have a rough curve (only 20% A’s and 30% B’s) with kids that want to apply to Haas. If you aren’t really that into Econ or PEIS, both classes are a waste of time.

As a general rule of thumb: If any major requires Stats 2, they will take Stats 20, 21, even 131a, etc, as well. Therefore, it is always better to take 20 or 21 instead of 2, just to be on the safe side. In your situation, the only majors that require stats are Econ and PEIS. The 2nd one will allow Stats 2, but Econ will require Stats 20/21. Your choice.

Stats won’t be hard if you took two years of Calc in high school (assuming you did decently well in them.) 20 is harder than 2, but not that much. Just take it.

I’m a prospective integrative bio major looking to study something ecology related in grad school. The IB website says that a statistics class is recommended for students interested in med/grad school but doesn’t specify. Which one should I take? I got a 5 on my AP Stats exam if that makes a difference.

I took Stats 20 and I don’t think you have to know calculus at all really. I know it’s a prereq but I never used any of it.

Well. On the Berkeley podcast for Stats 21 (or was it 20?), the prof said the curriculum is the SAME. But 21 focuses on more business application, 20 has a few concepts not covered in 2 (given out in his own handouts), and 2 is like the introduction and the bare minimum. All 3 lectures series use the same book and the same overall curicul. but with different emphasis and numbers of applications. Hope it helps.
(and no, there isn’t a lot of calculus. Know stuff like, basic integral)

Calculus is not a prereq for Stats 2 (one semester needed for 20 and 21). However, you don’t need to know any calculus for 20 and 21. Simple high school math is enough. Integrals will NOT be used.

abbccc: Normally, getting a 5 on AP Stats would waive any lower division stats prerequisites. However, if you’re applying to a medical school, I would check with the school itself. I don’t think there are any that med schools that absolutely REQUIRE stats though. They probably just require any type of “quantitative” course or “recommend” stats.
