Stats for foreign students getting accepted to US med schools?

Hi All,

Does anyone have stats on foreign students getting accepted to US med schools?

The MSAR has stats for the number of international students that apply and get interviewed at each med school.

Check out the AAMC’s data tables… They’re not good and many (most?) schools will want prereqs done at a US institution (if not the entire degree). As an internat’l student, you would have to be far above the average for any given school (both my stats and ECs). In most cases, you would probably have better luck staying in your own country for med school but if extraordinary and with outstanding reasons for pursuing a US medical education that fit very well with a given school’s mission, you may be a reasonable candidate.

I don’t have the latest MSAR with me. My DS has the MSAR with him at College.
Just curious what are the numbers like? Is it 1 or 2 seats/year in private institutions?

I suspect State funded schools do not accept foreign students at all.

^average (mean) is 2 seats/yr. Pretty large variation per school (many 0, a few as high as 5-10)

(Source: med school spreadsheet calculation; current edition uses MSAR 2010-2011 data)

Purely anecdotal but my daughter’s ex - Oxbridge undergrad, Oxbridge master’s - applied to 20+ US medical schools and was invited for one interview. Even though he is a talented guy I suspect he was lucky to get even one having taken no courses at a US college.

^ Many US medical schools require of applicants that attended non-US/Canada undergraduate colleges at least a year of study at a US school. If they don’t have this, they are automatically disqualified. There was a guy on SDN who attended a school outside the US/Canada with competitive stats but didn’t know of this requirement; he went through one cycle not getting in anywhere before he was told he wasn’t considered because he didn’t have the requirements.

Did some checking on line. It appears that state schools do not accept any foreign students at all. Only the private ones do but they ask for 4 years worth total tuition at one shot or in an escrow account (exa. Cornell). Which foreign student will have $200,000 to produce at one shot anyway? May be only children of Trump equivalents…
