I’m applying to the Viterbi School of Engineering for Fall 2010 as an incoming freshman. I noticed that a few people on these forums have reported that their status has gone from “Being reviewed by admissions committee” to “Forwarded to admissions committee” to “Being reviewed …” again.

My theory for that is that maybe the school we are applying to is getting the app, reviewing it, and then forwarding it to the “head admissions committee”, which then does a final review.

This is supposedly how UCLA operates. I got an email from their engineering school inviting me to an open house in late March and read that the engineering school reviews it and recommends (or not) the applicant to the head admissions committee.

As for all the other random status changes, I have no idea. I’m just throwing out an idea about the review->forwarded->review pattern.

I’m sure there are several other pathways an application can travel to become accepted, depending on the application itself, the school reviewing it, and other variables.
