I think I already know the answer to this, but I just want to make sure if possible. I am in the process of adopting my stepdaughter who will be entering college in the fall of 2016. As long as it is finalized before her financial aid paperwork is due am I correct in assuming that we will not have to worry about completing CSS or institutional NCP forms since I will legally be her father and listed as such on her birth certificate? Yes…you will be listed as her parent on the actual Profile.
I will say yes…IF the bio parent’s right have been terminated. Some states now allow step parent adoption even if the bio parent’s right haven’t been terminated. In that case, the child might be considered to have 3 parents and there still is a non-custodial parent. However, if you fill in the forms that you are her parents, no one will ever question that there is another parent (unless there is still child support coming in).
