I am starting college next year, and wanted to know if there are any steps I could take to be in a better position to be approved for about 5000 in student loans my sophomore year? Right now my parents are cosigning but they would prefer to not be responsible after this year.

I am already taking Stafford loans so I am aware of that option.

Do I establish a credit history this year? Get a credit card or a cell phone on my bill?

What most lenders want to see is how you are going to be repaying the loan. They want to see INCOME. That is why most students cannot get loans without cosigners.

You need to get a paying job to show that you can afford to pay back any loans taken out. Work full time this summer and/or as many part time jobs you can find. You need to save up cash. Work a part time job now after school/weekends so they will hire you for summer. Or borrow 5K from grandparents, relatives or friends. Good Luck!
