Stern bpe vs stern economics vs cas economics

Hi. I just got into stern bpe. I want to go for a phD in economics and i know that ill have to take tons of math. I think bpe is really cool, but im worried about my career aspirations. I want the ability to go for a phd while also having really good job opportunities open. Anyway, which should i choose? Stern bpe, a stern core curriculum major with a concentration in economics, or cas economics with a double major in math as well. In stern, id probably get a minor in math instead of a major.

The number of people applying for Economics PhDs are very limited. Enjoy the BPE program if that is what you desire, or take the Stern Economics/Math minor. I think you will be more prepared with the latter for an Economics PhD, but you only go once to college, and experiencing the world is part of making you mature. Stay in BPE for your freshman Fall semester. I am told that it is easy to change into Stern Economics track.

If you’re planning to get a PhD, whether you’re in Stern or not really makes no difference. CAS Econ/Math would provide the most rigorous theoretical background, which would best prepare you for a PhD program. However, Stern BPE sounds like a great program, and it surely wouldn’t hurt your chances down the road if you were to stay in it, especially if you decide to forgo the PhD to work on Wall Street or something.

Depends. If you want a more Math based economics background, go to Stern. But if you are okay with having a liberal arts foundation while at the same time double majoring in math, then go to CAS.

Hi Sulaiman400, you said that you just got (admitted?) into Stern BPE… In that case, you can’t change/switch to another program, can you? According to the NYU web site you are stuck with the program you applied to… Is that correct?

You can change within the school that you got accepted into after/during your first semester.

hi! I got into the BPE too but don’t rmb applying to it…I was rather clueless about it too and after checking on the internet, I am kind of convinced that this might provide me with a great college experience. Being able to spend one year in London sure is great, but I’m a bit concerned about the quality of education we’re getting since moving from place to place takes some getting-used-to. Besides, future career also looks…hmmmm… i donno but I can’t seem to come up with any relative jobs with considerable salary…Any thoughts?

Stern Economics or Stern BPE would set you up perfectly for a job on The Street and London is a global epicenter for finance and economic thought so any worries about “transitions” should be outweighed by the ridiculously good opportunities that you’d get. Also, I’m pretty sure the quality of your education won’t suffer because you move from one location to the next, especially from the sound of this program. I think the undergrad education at Stern in terms of Finance, Economics or the BPE is one of the best in the world (business related).

hello yoyoma999
thanks a lot for your reply!Yeah I think you’re right, maybe I shouldn’t be this worried about it…:stuck_out_tongue: I was scared after a senior switched from BPE to pure biz, but as long as I can make enough money to repay my loan with a degree from BPE then I’m totally fine with it:P
