This makes me very scared. $275,000 is a house. I am an international student so I have to pay in full. My family is definitely stretching budget a lot to pay for my college education…

Yeah, that’s a pretty scary video and there’s a few others floating around the Internet about NYU graduates in six-figure debt.

The question you ask is definitely a perplexing one. I believe you are going to Stern, so my advice to you would be to think about what type of career you want to pursue in life because the ultimate decision you have to make is COST VS. REWARD. If you want to go into some type of industry like finance where starting salaries are very high, then it might make sense. Also, barring unemployment, you have to think about where you are going to be 10 years down the road. Do you want to be a big spender or are you a generally conservative person? The $275,000 debt might be worth it if you want to spend big because it has a higher payoff 10 years from now. How you see your lifestyle playing out is another aspect to consider.

The next important piece of advice I can give you is that you have to be committed to some type of career. If you are someone who doesn’t really know what they want to do or are just saying I’ll figure it out in college, then the tuition might not be worth it. You have to know what you want to do in life because it makes your path a lot easier and gives you a better idea of WHAT YOU’RE REALLY PAYING FOR.

To sum it up, know what you want in life and be fully committed to it. That’s when paying for NYU is worth it. Imagine where you see yourself 10 years from now and what you imagine your lifestyle will be like. If you’re not sure about career prospects, then I’d think about whether it’s really worth it.
