Still unsure about what I want to study

I am a rising junior and still uncertain about my field of interest. I am gearing towards engineering but doing my summer internship with Smithsonian scientist-mentor. Its more about learning the skills of performing research . My question is : Is it very important to know your field of interest in order to apply into Virginia colleges? For example if I am applying to UVA, do I have to talk about my area of interest in the essay? Or is there any such kind of thing like general essay which is good enough for any college?

For the college essay, you can talk about anything you want, not necessarily your major. In fact, it is recommended that you don’t talk about academics in your essay, because colleges already see your scores. The purpose of the essay is so colleges can get to know you better as a person. You should look into what you are good at and what your passion is. Other than that, you have time to choose your major later
