Stolen coat at party

What about a thrift store?

Sierra Trading Post has excellent bargains. Goodwill, etc., a good idea, too. “Google” your specifications, see what you find. Good luck. S left a much loved CK coat on rack at bar, and it disappeared. It had been a bargain find at Costco. Sigh.

I would knit my own coat before taking out a loan for one. That is what Goodwill, Value Village and local thrifts are for.

A couple of years ago I was waiting for my kid who was in Forever XXI and saw winter coats for $10 or 15 bucks. I bought a bunch and gave them out to the homeless. If there is one in either your area or near you son you might try them.

That includes shipping. There might be others!

My son lost an entire washing-machine worth of new clothes from a dorm washer at the end of a summer term. It happens.

I would go to a department store- Macy’s, Sak’s, Bloomingdale’s, etc. They are very fashion conscious, and when they move last-year’s stuff, they practically give it away. Nobody. NOBODY. is buying winter coats right now. Even the die-hard hold-outs would have been flushed out over the last 2-3 weeks. If they have inventory, it will be cheaper than Burlington, Goodwill, etc.

6pm is a good source:

I have filtered for $50 and under and “insulated”.

I had never heard of a fracket before, and now twice in one day. My son called to tell me he was going shopping for a few things, including a fracket.

Not sure I understand the derision here. Unless I am missing something, the OP might not have the budget to buy a coat at this precise moment, and the kid needs one asap. And asap is an understatement with the current weather.

I know that one can buy a Pea Coat for around 50 dollars on Amazon right now! The goodwill routes are all fine and dandy, but I merely pointed out that the low budget at this time could be shored up by a quick trip to the financial aid office and filing a request for a loan. What is the cost of a student loan today? The school has the ability to add it to the COA and process it quickly. In case one wants to get rid of it later, it is easy to pay off.

Parents are often struggling to help their children, but there are times when the student himself can take of a temporary setback by using the tools at his disposal. Having a small loan added to 4 years at Yale should not be the end of the world for anyone!

I thought the OP was clear that this wasn’t in the budget right now and may have few choices to get it resolved quickly
it’s cold in New England

Does the campus have insurance to cover stolen property?

DS told stories of hustling across campus to the designated party site sans coat because so many of his friends had ‘lost’ winter coats at frat parties and the like. Sadly, I believe it’s quite common.

It would be the student’s responsibility to get insurance to cover personal property like a coat
but like.y it would not be worth a claim as the deductible could be higher than the cost of a coat.

Time to find a friend with a car. Take a little trip to the nearest shopping places
winter coats are now on sale.

I also would suggest a resale store.

In the meantime
layers
sweater or hoodie under a fleece.

Our Old Navy store had nice wool jackets that had a quilted lining and zipper on sale for $17. They were $60 originally.
Walmart and other stores should be putting winter items on sale too.

xiggi-because borrowing money for something like a coat-another coat that could ALSO get lost or stolen is insanity to me. Kid’s mom made it clear there is no spare money and I’ve been in that situation, when Goodwill or the like was my only option. Now I shop there for the thrill of the hunt, but why pay (or borrow) $30, 40 50 or more when you can find a good, warm coat for $10. I know that might not make sense to people with plenty of funds but borrow, even such a small amount, doesn’t make sense when you have nothing.

My son’s north face jacket stolen first year, even with his name written in. He ordered a most common color. I had my fur hat stolen at a party, even though I tucked it into sleeve of jacket. Lesson tobe learned–people steal. Go with disposable items. Nowadays, I’d wrap items around my waist.

Maybe a CC’er has a used coat that they could donate to the OP’s son. Several years ago a college CC’er lost their cell phone and couldnt afford a new one so I sent him one of my old ones that was compatible with his carrier. I never heard back from the student, but I felt good giving something considering I have so little. Just a thought.

If you happen to have NSSI insurance (or the other one people recommend, I forgot the name) the deductible is only $25.00. I believe the coat would be covered. I mention it because sometimes when we think of insurance claims we think of their electronics or cameras but clothes are covered too.

I agree with @GA2012MOM‌ What size coat is needed? And I’m guessing the need is for severe weather?

I think that costco link is broken. here’s the one with free shipping.

it’s the one on the top row right

I second the insurance claim if you have that insurance. Especially since you just bought it and can probably come up with the receipt. Also if you bought it with an American Express card and it’s been less than 90 days it’s covered.
